    http://www.wsj.com/articles/texas-group-races-for-high-speed-rail-1423592965

In the race to build a bullet train in the U.S., a Texas group aims to be the first to market—to zip travelers from Dallas to Houston in 90 minutes as soon as 2021—without a dime in federal or state subsidies.

The $10 billion Texas Central Railway project touts itself as fully private, in contrast to a proposed, $68 billion high-speed train system in California that is supported by taxpayers and has been delayed by legal and political opposition.

But the Texas train does have a potential government backer: Japan. Japan’s export bank said it is considering a loan to Texas Central Railway. The venture also involves*Central Japan Railway*Co. , a private business that operates that country’s busiest bullet-train line and is eager to see Japanese rail technology exported to America.

I'd much rather have one that goes to Austin.

    Screw Dallas!

Texas doing anything (good) first is beastly.

    The convenience is a bonus.

Best of luck: the local colleges, sports teams, hotels and corporations (who would save on relocation fees for non-local hires) should all be behind it. Let's just see if after the first mid-summer, mid-route shutdown or hurricane evacuation, there's $10 billion worth of return business for consumers who drive to and from Dallas on a whim.

$10 bill??? That's pretty cheap for a line from Hou to Dallas. Wasn't the Austin line only 9 miles for 10 bil? Maybe that's because they had to cut through urban areas and it would cost more to buy the land?

I'd be in favor of this even if it was a publicly funded. 10 bil is a great deal for an alternate way from Hou-Dallas. I'd eventually like to see a Hou, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio "loop."

I imagine a round trip ticket would be around $150-$200.

i seem to remember reading they were aiming for ~ $100 for a round trip ticket, or maybe even less than that.

There really should be sometime type of train that connects through Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio and a few of the other cities along the way.

I'd imagine that it would be a cash cow.

why? Sprawling cities that are less than an hour apart? The traffic congestion through there is less people commuting from San Antonio to Austin (or vice versa) but rather intra-city traffic and the I-35 trucking corridor from Mexico up the gut of the US.

Exactly, it would open up the business more for all of those cities.

Also, it would be great to catch a train and hit the river walk and then train it back - the USA is so far behind the rest of the world in trains/transit.

I think a train connecting Austin and SA would be awesome, but I don't think it would be a good financial investment for a private company. Not enough business travel between the two places. There are commuters between both places, but those commuters are unlikely to use a train between the cities unless it is more affordable than car.

As someone who lived in San Marcos for five years, I know that a train connecting it to Austin and San Antonio would've been a godsend. Your point on the trucking is legit, but that also supports reasoning to bolster the freight rail infrastructure through there as well.

Seems like an excellent opportunity for the gov and UP to team up and make something happen for the greater good.
