Texas liberals shamefully protest Perry's measures to safeguard women's health

Shameful. Texas republicans have been pushing through measures to protect women's health. Improving standards of abortion clinics, ensuring physicians who execute abortions have admitting privileges at a hospital no more than 30 miles away, and ensuring a doctor is present when the abortion drug is administered. What do liberals do? They protest.

AUSTIN — More than 1,000 protesters descended on the state Capitol on Sunday trying to derail legislation to toughen abortion restrictions and ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy.

Anti-abortion groups also turned out in support of the measure, though apparently in fewer numbers. “Where we turn out is in the polls,” said Kyleen Wright of Mansfield, president of Texans for Life and a leading supporter of the proposed restrictions.

House debate on the legislative package was expected to extend well into the evening — and possibly past midnight — as Democrats planned a series of stalling maneuvers in an attempt to run out the clock on the bill in the remaining two days of the Legislature’s special session.

House members first had to dispatch legislation designed to overcome a constitutional barrier that has blocked the prosecution of 17-year-old defendants accused of capital crimes. But a point of order on the bill forced members into a two-hour recess to work out a parliamentary dispute, further delaying the start of debate on the abortion legislation.

The criminal justice legislation has been closely watched in Parker County, where prosecutors have been unable to move forward in trying teenager Jake Evans. Evans admitted killing his mother and sister in October.

The abortion measure is by far the most polarizing issue confronting lawmakers as they head toward adjournment Tuesday. Also awaiting final action in the four-item special session are bills on transportation, criminal justice and redistricting.

Gov. Rick Perry, who is expected to announce a decision on his political future by July 1, added abortion to the special session to clear the way for legislation that he said would crack down on substandard abortion providers.

“We have an obligation to protect unborn children, and to hold those who peddle these abortions to standards that would minimize the death, disease and pain they cause,” Perry said in expanding the special session, which he originally called to deal with redistricting.

Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Houston, called the abortion bills “very divisive” and said they “never should have been added in the first place.”

The House legislation, identical to a bill that passed the Senate over fierce objections from Democrats, would tighten restrictions on abortion clinics and doctors who perform abortions. House members were also poised to include a so-called fetal pain provision banning abortions on or after 20 weeks, a provision that was removed from the Senate bill.

Supporters acknowledge that the measures would close subpar facilities but dispute opponents’ assertions that the restrictions would close all but five of the more than 40 abortion clinics in Texas.

Hundreds of opponents lined the Capitol stairways and packed the House gallery as they responded to calls by abortion-rights groups to protest the bills. Protest organizers said that more than 1,000 had signaled their intention to show up for the debate.

Jayne Keedy, a 63-year-old market research executive from Austin, wore a red T-shirt emblazoned “Don’t Mess with Texas Women” as she stood among a cluster of demonstrators outside the second-floor House chamber. Keedy said her intention was to “make a presence in protest.”

Representing the other side of the issue were Thomas Umstattd of Austin and Don Davidson of Georgetown, who wore red tape emblazoned with “life” over their mouths.

Umstattd momentarily removed the tape to describe himself as “just a pro-life” supporter “passionate about standing for the life of the unborn.” The tape, he said, symbolized the “voicelessness of the unborn.”

Demonstrators on both sides of the issue clustered near the House chamber, sometimes applauding as members representing their positions passed to go inside. Scores of abortion-rights advocates wearing orange T-shirts stood on the stairway nearest the chamber chanting, “Women’s rights are under attack!”

The House and Senate bills require that Texas abortion clinics, which are located mostly in urban areas, adhere to the same standards as a licensed ambulatory surgical center.

The bills also require that abortion clinic physicians have admitting privileges in a hospital within 30 miles of the place where they perform abortions. And they require that if doctors administer the abortion-inducing drug RU-486, they do so in person.

A clear demonstration of lack of intellect when you don't understand the article from which you are trying to make a point.

You can argue the ethics on how late is too late for an abortion but you still did use a strawman's argument suggesting liberals are against women's health because they are against this particular bill.

If you wanted to debate the 20 weeks portion then you shouldn't have included the shameless title to this thread.

similar to how liberals hypocritically accuse Republicans of being against women's health when they oppose Planned Parenthood (abortion executors)?

OOPS backfired on ya, didn't it?

Aren't you using a strawman by implying all liberals think and act alike?

Oh texxx, with all due respect, what absolute crap. I know several people in Austin involved, some deeply indeed, in state government. People who deal with the current Republican majority, and both the Governor and his staff, his now countless appointees (due to his absurd time in office), and those people make fun of him all the time. Redicule him. Think him an embarrassment to the state. A buffoon. A most clever man, far more clever than intelligent. In short, the worst kind of governor for our state. And this subject you bring up? They see it as what it is... simply another attempt to cater to his far-right big money donors, and the far-right minority who will insure his victory in whatever primary he enters next. Something hurtful and destructive to women. And here I thought you liked women. I guess not. Whatever works for you, dude.

Really, texxx, you should get out more.

The legislation is destructive to women? Perhaps you could explain how killing babies after 20 weeks is helpful to women, or their health.

According to the author of this bill, women who are raped can get "cleaned out" by rape kits.
