I almost wrecked my car this morning listening to KFAN Minnesota Sports Radio. I was driving to a meeting and the host of the late morning show, Paul Allan, was comparing Kevin Love to Larry Bird. He went on to talk about how much tougher things were for Larry Bird and that the 1980's were the golden age of the NBA. He ran down a list of how tough the teams were back then and when he got to the Rockets he said, "and The Houston Rockets had the Twin Towers with Jim Petersen off the bench. They also had something called Granville Waiters who was also pretty good!" I almost drove into the next lane cause I was laughing so hard. I remember Granville Waiters being the 12th guy on the Rockets bench in 1986 who looked like a black version of Martin Van Buren. Granville Waiters Martin Van Buren. I gotta give PA props for one of the most obscure Rockets references.
The only thing that Kevin Love and Larry Bird have in common is there both white... That's insult to Larry Bird... T_Man
That's pretty much how PA feels but from what I gather he feels the whole league is a shadow of what it was in the 1980's.
Thanks for labeling the pics of Van Buren and Granville, otherwise, damn if I could tell the difference! WOW! Granville used to have a website at http://www.granvillewaiters.com, but that seems to have disappeared. There's this "site", I guess : http://www.granvillewaiters.net.
I remember Granville. He was definitely the 11-12th man, but he was tall. I can't think of another NBA player that has looked like "Granbill". Love and Bird have nothing in common.
It's funny how Love is averaging 25 15 with like 44% from 3point and he's only 23 and people still talk ****
A couple of great things about Waiters. In that picture you have of him, I believe he was about 25 years old. The other thing great thing is they once asked a coach or someone from the organization about Waiters being on the team. The answer was that Ralph and Hakeem needed a tall guy to practice against. I loved Granville Waiters. He's one of the greatest ever!
Uhhh. .. More like 16th or 17th man He and Greg Kite were perrenial All-Stars on the "7 foot plus stiffs of '80's" team. Hasheem Thabeet wore Granville's number in honor at this years game
Yep he had a "timeless" look. I remember hearing that too. Apparently Jim "The Ivory Tower" Petersen was too valuable to get beat around by Dream and Sampson. Greatest NBA player ever who could win a Martin Van Buren look alike contest!
