The rockets must be one of the teams that make money in the league. For the next 2 years we will be spending at least $7+ million for a head Coach. We don't know the Salary yet but it is easy to imagine that it is in the 3-4.5 mil Range. Considering what everyone else is getting it will be more towards 5M Mchale's salary was 13+mil for 3 years. What other team out there is paying more for head coaches? Furthermore, one could argue if you are going to pay this much, gotta make sure it is the damn best coach out there. D'Antoni isnt worth $7+M a year in my opinion.
