He isn't an average role player, definitely better than that. But he is much closer to the "average role player" level than he is to being an "all-star" or the "superstar" he claimed himself to be when he high tailed out of Houston. The only way I can see Parsons ever making an All-Star team is if he gets Kyle Korver / Tayshuan Prince treatment aka be a big part to the the best team in basketball and injuries allow you to get a replacement spot. Even then, prime Prince was a better player than Parsons based on Prince's defense alone and Parsons will never be the shooter Korver is.

Parsons has a setback on his injury: At this point, Parsons hopes he can play in Wednesday's regular-season finale against Portland, but that's no guarantee. In fact, he can't be sure he'll be ready to go for Game 1 in San Antonio or Memphis or Houston or Los Angeles. If the playoffs started now, Parsons said he couldn't play. This isn't about precaution. Parsons' knee is a problem for the Mavs, who desperately need their $46 million small forward in peak form for the playoffs. "Am I concerned? Yeah, I'm concerned," coach Rick Carlisle said. "We'll see where we are. We're not going to take any risks with it. He desperately wants to play, and he's played hurt a lot this year. When he came back from his foot thing, he was out there a lot earlier than a lot of guys would have been. We've just got to make sure we're smart about the whole thing." Parsons simply has no lift and no explosiveness, even though the swelling in the knee is down. The 6-foot-9 small forward could barely dunk off his right foot Sunday, even before he suffered the setback. "Right now, I think if I played, not only do I think I'd further the injury, I know I'm not as good as I could be, and I'd probably hurt more than I'd help," Parsons said while pedaling on an exercise bike before he watched Rajon Rondo and the Mavs reserves play the Utah Jazz. Parsons doesn't know exactly what's wrong with his knee. The MRI from April 3, the day after soreness and swelling forced him to leave the Mavs' loss to the Houston Rockets in the third quarter, came back clean. The swelling has been gone for several days. But the soreness persists. http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/mavericks/post/_/id/4705111/concern-grows-after-parsons-suffers-setback
TM: Swelling is gone. Pain hasn't left. The question is will he be healthy enough to help? He can go out there now and hurt the team. Yesterday was the first day I had doubt if he would be ready for the playoffs. Could barely dunk off his right foot. Without him, Rick Carlisle, I hope you have rabbits in your hat. Against the Spurs, I have a hard time seeing them win more than a game. Who are they hoping to face? Rockets. Resigned to the fact that it'll be the Spurs. Odds greatly in favor of SA. MS: You have to be concerned. He hasn't been able to shake it. No one thought it would last this long. He'll try to play in the playoffs. If they needed more concern, it's a concern. You saw in the last game he played, he was moving horrendously. It's clearly not right and tack it on to the long list of issues for this team. Top two issues with this team? Defending and rebounding. Everyone wants to talk Rondo and Monta. Monta did not do a good job covering up his unhappiness in Denver. Reality is, if it's Houston, a puncher's chance. SA, don't expect it to go 7 games. They aren't going into this with great optimism but the fact it's a list of issues, it's not good. Chemistry stuff gets thrown around. It's not like they hate each other. Off the court, you wouldn't think there is chemistry issues. On court fit is a major problem. I was implying, the Parsons thing we talked about, he's been their best player in the 2nd half. There's always this belief there's playoff Rondo we haven't seen. They're more than that away from giving these top seeds a push. Maybe I'm being disrespectful to Carlisle but too many things to point at right now. They aren't going into the playoffs on a good note and that's a problem. How much can a coach overcome lack of talent? Last year in the first round, that was as good of an example. For 6 games they had SA worried. Can Rick do better than that? You're putting a lot of pressure on your coach. Houston, no doubt coaching advantage to Rick. Houston gives them a puncher's chance. Harden has struggled in the playoffs. He has to step up and show he can be this Harden in the playoffs. He knows that. He'll go in with a chip and there will be scrutiny and they are still hurting from that first round loss from Portland. Houston is weakened. Harden is such a monster on his own. Having Dwight back makes them better defensively. Again, puncher's chance and the hate between the teams might sharpen the Mavs focus. Dallas does not want to see San Antonio.
Any update on Parsons? Will he even be back for this series or are they taking it day-to-day? How about Devin Harris? I know Jefferson starts if Parsons is out, but what's the rest of the rotation - Villanueva, Aminu/Dirk lineup, go small with 3 guards? Seems like the Rockets would be able to exploit relentlessly. That Mavs bench is thin.
