James Harden on the Dan Patrick Show 4/9/15

Mostly a fun interview, wish we got more thoughtful questions from a guy who claims the Rockets as "his team."

DP: Let me start with a serious question. Your last concert, James was _____?

JH: Last concert was probably about a month ago.

DP: Who’d you see?

JH: It was Chris Brown.

DP: Best concert you ever saw?

JH: Michael Jackson.

DP: Ohhh man! How old were you when you saw Mike?

JH: I was young, I was real young. Real, real young. I didn't really get the full experience like I wanted to, but I was there.

DP: Did you have a glove on, could you moon walk? Did you do all of that?

JH: I had the curls and everything.

DP: Can you moon walk?

JH: No way.

DP: No?

JH: I got bad feet.

DP: How much fun are you having this year?

JH: I’m having a great time. Probably the best year thus far since I've been in the NBA. Just because I’m comfortable. I’m comfortable, and I know my teammates, I know my coaches, and we’re just going with the flow.

DP: Do you get tired? Because I tell people, to be a scorer takes a lot of energy. Because your team is really relying on you to put up 25 shots a game. I mean I know that you've improved your other stats, but it can be tiring being a great scorer.

JH: I think, you know, you train for it, and you just gotta make sure you’re doing the right things to take care of your body. You know, like you said it’s a grind and it’s every single night, so I gotta make sure I’m getting stretched and you know, treatment and things like that to make sure I’m ready to go every single night.

DP: Could you run a marathon?

JH: Uhh, yeah sure if I train for it…but right now I’m probably not.

DP: (laughs) Yeah I was wondering about that, the amount of mileage that you have during the course of the year, have you ever tabulated that, how much you run?

JH: No, I haven’t. But I should check up on that. It’s probably a lot of miles, but a marathon just right off the bat? Ehhh, it’d be tough.

DP: When did you know that you couldn’t be stopped? Or that you had this gift to be a great scorer?

JH: Umm, you know I think it was in high school. Just being crafty, I never was the fastest guy or the most athletic guy on the court, but you know I just found a way to score, found a way to put the ball in the basket, and it’s kind of carried me. And I just started working hard and you know, here I am, still doing it.

DP: 'Cause I watch and then you sort of say, “Wait, he just ended up with 41 against Oklahoma City.” Like it’s kind of surprising, you don’t do it in a flamboyant way, it’s just sort of that methodical serial killer - like you just keep coming after people. I don’t know what that trait is, but you certainly have it.

JH: Sometimes I feel surprised myself as well. You know, just like I said, how hard I had to work to get to this point. I’m a nonchalant type of person, I’m relaxed and kind of go at my own pace, you know, so I kind of do things in my own style and my own way - that makes me who I am.

DP: Who or what could make you shave?

JH: Oooh. I’ve never really thought about that. The beard has been here for a couple years now. I mean I’ve thought about shaving probably a couple years down the line, but right now? I don’t think anyone or anybody.

DP: What if a beautiful woman said “Hey, I love ya, but the beard’s gotta go”? Does she or does the beard go?

JH: (laughing) I’d probably be single still.

DP: You’d get rid of her?

JH: Yeah, I’d probably still be single.

DP: Man, man. Give me the actress or singer you’d shave for.

JH: Oooh, uhhh…I can’t say it because she’s married, so…

DP: Ok, hypothetically if Beyonce is single –

JH: (cracks up laughing) Who said it was Beyonce?!

DP: My bad, my bad, I was just assuming it was Beyonce. So this woman is married. BUT Rihanna’s not married!

JH: Ooh, Rihanna.

DP: Yeah, what do you think?

JH: Ooh.

DP: If RiRi says, “Hey James, lose the beard…”

JH: You know what, I would have to be put in that situation. I would have to be put in that situation and that’s something we’d have to talk about.

DP: Alright, what is your nickname, by the way?

JH: The Beard.

DP: Ok, I came up with Harden the Interruption.

JH: Ooh, that’s dope.

DP: Are you ok with Harden The Interruption?

JH: Yeah, I might have to go with that one.

DP: You’re gonna co-sign on that?

JH: Yeah, that’s pretty dope. I’m gonna give you all the credit for it, though.

DP: Alright, alright cool. Because I loved it. It came to me in the middle of the night and I went, “Harden the Interruption.” So I came in the next day and said to my guys, “Harden the Interruption” and they go, “What are you talking about?” I said, “James Harden, he is the interruption.” I thought it was perfect.

JH: Yeah, I might have to put that on my Instagram today and credit you in it.

DP: I like it. You know what I’m going to do? I’m going create ‘Harden the Interruption’ t-shirt and I’m sending it to you.

JH: Wow…

DP: And to Rihanna, and to Beyonce.

JH: (laughs)

DP: How do you think that would go over if Beyonce’s wearing a ‘Harden the Interruption’ t-shirt and Jay-Z goes, “What’s that? What’s that, B?”

JH: I don’t want to cause – you know, I don’t want any drama. (laughs)

DP: If you can’t vote for you, who gets your vote for MVP?

JH: Um, I would say Steph. He’s the best player on the best team in the NBA right now.

DP: But if you could vote for you, would you?

JH: Um, yeah I would say myself. I would say myself, and you know just because what’s been going on with the Rockets all season, how we had a lot of injuries and things like that, you know. We found ways to win. We found ways to win and um, you know, I think we’re second in the West right now. Right behind the Warriors.

DP: Yeah, and I said usually the best player on the best team can get the MVP. I think there’s a LeBron fatigue where people aren’t going to vote for him. But I was saying last hour to Mark Cuban, I said I can make a really strong case for James Harden for MVP. I don’t think there’s a wrong choice between you and Steph. I think Steph will win it, but the more I look at what you’ve worked with, the injuries, the year you put in, it’s probably going to be a shame that you won’t win it.

JH: Well you know, uh, just gotta finish the season strong. I’m not really focused on putting all my attention into that award. I’m more concerned about how we’re playing –

DP: Yeah, do some damage in the playoffs. That will be the key. You can win the MVP and bow out in the first round or you can go to the NBA Finals.

JH: Yeah. So that’s all that matters, you know, I think we have a lot left in the locker room to get to the Finals and that’s what I’m focused on, how can we get a good rhythm going into playoffs.

DP: The most career points in the NBA by a player that went to Arizona State is who?

JH: Uhhh...

DP: All-time NBA points by any player who went to Arizona State.

JH: If I had to guess I would say Eddie House.

DP: Byron Scott.

JH: Oh..what was that?

DP: 15,000.

JH: Ooh. Yeah I have a long way to go.

DP: (laughs) Second on the list is Fat Lever with 10,000 points. You have the third most points of any player that went to Arizona State, just almost 8,800.

JH: Oh, I’m not too far behind.

DP: No, no, no. You’re going to move into second place next year. And then the way you shoot – I got you, what? Three years and then you past Byron Scott as the greatest NBA scorer from Arizona State.

JH: Ooh. So in three years we’re going to have a – I mean hopefully it’s before that – but in three years we definitely have to talk again, catch up on that.

DP: Yeah, I’ll have you on again. Just pencil me in three years from now on this date. I will call you and then we can celebrate.

JH: That’s perfect. (laughs)

DP: Alright. And he’s by the way letting everyone know on blast here, he’s known as The Interruption. It’s Harden, The Interruption. He’s James Harden of my Houston Rockets. Congrats on the season so far and I’m sending t-shirts your way – Harden the Interruption.
