Are the Rox just trying to get an All Star for the 2013 game?

I don't know it just seems like these reported attempts at "renting" players like Melo and Howard don't make us that competitive against the likes of 2nd roung playoff teams, or I wish the upper echelon teams like OKC MIA CHI. (especially if we lose a lot of young assets and picks in the trades).

So that makes me ask: what's the rush to get a big name? The skeptic in me makes me think it's somehow related to promoting the all star gm or selling more tickets. There's nothing wrong with wanting to increase revenues, but it sucks if it costs us in being competitive long term. Am I off base?

Yes I'm sure this is why.......

(I'll admit it would be a nice bonus to have Dwight Howard representing us at the ASG though.)

the AS game will sell out regardless of whether the Rockets have an all star in that game. People fly in from all over the country to attend those, it's not just locals.

Usually, there are 1 or 2 home team players every time. Just saying.

E_Saiyan - thanks for such an intellectual response

The Rockets are trying to get an All Star so we can finally win some meaningful games.

    1. They tried to trade for Stoudemire when he was still with the Suns, but they felt uncomfortable with just a rental.
    2. They tried to recruit Bosh, he signed with Miami.
    3. They tried to trade for Gasol earlier in the year which was c***blocked by Stern.
    4. They tried to trade for an all-star at this year's deadline by trading for Howard, but Howard signed in for an extra year.

Now, they are trying for Howard yet again. Sorry, man, I doubt it's for the plans for the upcoming all-star game. They want to make the play-offs.

I thought so too. I thought you started off as rookies(I did, IIRC) and you had to 'prove' you 'deserved' to start threads and such. No rookies were allowed to start threads before.

it seems everyone starts as a member now and has to do something stupid to get demoted to rookie. i liked the other way better, you should have to earn your stripes.

Those are good examples, especially Amare and Bosh earlier. But Gasol and Howard (and Melo's) camps openly said they didn't want to play here. Why are we trying to force it instead of developing?
