Thibs is one of the premier minds in terms of defensive schemes. He's also been put in a uniquely difficult situation in terms of injuries to Rose, Gibson, Deng and Boozer. The question of course is how much of it is self-inflicted.

While Thibs has been roundly criticized for overplaying his players, it does not detract from his NBA altering defensive schemes. Thibs is one of the best Head Coaches in the NBA in terms of X's and O's, and being a genius makes up for a lot. Even if one of his blind spots is over-practicing his players and making them play too many minutes.

This is far from an uncommon opinion. Thibodeau's stubborn attitude towards minutes has created a rift between the Ownership/FO and Thibodeau. Only Thibs genius in terms of schemes has saved him. Had he been a mediocre coach, he'd most likely be long gone.

When a Head Coach is widely recognized for being a genius at X's and O's, they can overcome their other shortcomings through sheer brilliance. Unfortunately, mediocre head coaches don't nor should they have such luxuries.

Thibs rest management is ugly as heck, but his genius in terms of what he puts on the court makes up for a lot. That doesn't excuse it from being a questionable approach both medically and long term financially.
