Doesn't change a thing, Knicks organization will still suck in be mediocrity for years to come.

I read somewhere PJ is demanding complete and absolute control over everything basketball related. Any change would be an improvement.

But can someone explain to me why a guy who's always been purely a coach is supposed to turn around a franchise from the front office? Guys like Pat Riley and Pop have done both for years with great success. PJ is a different bird. IMO, he is not the right man for the job.

This will change a lot. Carmelo will likely remain with the Knicks and maybe Bosh will try to join him

Meh, why not give the man a chance?

Yeah he's a different cat but he's earned a shot at it and as you've just said, any change at this point is a improvement.

This is their only shot at keeping Melo at this point too.

How would Bosh join? The Knicks are in salary cap hell. They're going to be like $30mil over the cap if they don't sign anyone else (if Melo stays). He's Phil Jackson, he's not Jesus Christ, and it would definitely take a miracle to move enough salary to sign Bosh.

If I had to guess, Jackson's likely targets would be Marc and Rondo in 2015. These guys seem his sort of players. High iq, competent on both sides. Phil is the type of guy Melo would give time to, Melo might opt in instead.

It is a risk and that is why everyone wanted him to coach but not no one offered him a real front office job with teeth to it. The Knicks are the large market he craves, they will pay him what he wants and get the shot he has wanted for years. From the Knicks perspective they think they retain Melo and in 2015 get to add another max player. With Jackson higher end free agents will listen.

Why will Jackson be good? Well what made him a good coach? It wasn't the X's and O's. He wasn't ever terribly interested in the plays or designs. He was a good coach because he identified smart people to surround himself with and he is competitive and demands accountability. Now that doesn't mean Jackson can judge talent or manage a salary cap, but he can sell himself, judge people and will get quality people to scout and handle the cap. Also he has the championships to keep Dolan off his back.

I have argued a similar point about Daryl Morey. His most impressive trait is that Morey consistently surrounds himself with bright, hardworking and effective subordinates.

New York media makes up this crap all the time. Remember when they were trading Shumpert for Faried

Jackson's job wouldn't be to manage the salary cap, he's not after the GM position, his job would be to essentially pick the GM, pick the coach, deal with star players. He would effectively become the owner in all but name, only sticking his nose into things from time to time would probably be welcomed rather than the opposite.

This is huge development for the Knicks franchise if Dolan is going to cede that kind of power to a giant like Phil. With Phil running the show, the Knicks will be able to attract top free agents.

Phil Jackson is using the Knicks job as leverage for a better job.

    This

I'll add that from interviews, PJ has always said the most interesting part of coaching for him wasn't the basketball part, but managing different and sometimes difficult personalities.

If the Knicks hire him and Dolan takes a back seat, the franchise will turn around

If you read the article it is obvious that Phil wanted nothing to do with the Knicks. It was just a courtesy call. The Knicks have nothing.

He probably doesn't want the coaching grind anymore.

But it'll be years before the Knicks are able to get out of their cap problems.

This is the Knicks, not the Nets. Most of their salary comes off the books after next year. It really isn't that bad.
