This team is completely flawed and exposed. That's on the GM. I would tank, but we can't even draft players correctly. I just don't think he's the guy to take the team to contender status like ever.

So how long until he is axed?

Who really cares? If he doesn't do anything now (universally acknowledged), what could possibly improve?

Hard to say. Rick Smith's job security is second to none.

He got the players the coach wanted.

Which mean ridiculously overpaying to move up in the draft or sign veterans

I think he's a definite goner if this season is a complete flameout.

Totally agree but it's time to hire a legit GM that is empowered to run the franchise instead of just being a sounding board and errand boy.

Normally the GM would be in trouble. But we really don't know how the Texans come to make important decisions, like draft selections. My guess is that McNair makes the final say on everything, and the head coach probably has the most influence on those decisions. But who really knows.

When the franchise was first put together, McNair hired Charley Casserly as GM. The feeling I have, is that in those early years Casserly was making most of the big decisions. The team didn't do all that well, so I think McNair wanted to take back much of the power from the GM and make decisions on his own, or at least allow more input from others in the organization.

So here we are. Multiple years of bad drafting has taken its toll, and we now look like one of the worst teams in the NFL.

Maybe it's time for the Texans to go back to having a real GM.

Next time I go to the restaurant and I don't like the meal or the service, I'm going to say "Fire whoever purchased the ingredients for this meal!"

So you think Rick Smith is just a dude who puts in orders on a computer?

    THIS!!

I am of the opinion that Rick is a rubber stamp
and that's what every coach wants
until they lose. . . .then they can blamee them
    and buy one more season

Based on the chef's requests, he tries to get the best bargain with the best company. But it don't mean squat if the chef isn't doing his job

    I agree with that.

But he still should be gone because the GM needs to at least be a capable sous chef.

As long as O'Brien is coach it doesn't matter who the GM is. O'Brien has final say over who makes the 53 man roster per his contract. And Brian Gaine is basically in charge of talent management/ evaluation.

This is a weird statement. You don't think things could improve by getting someone who actually does something positive? Is there some reason that the Texans can't be like other franchises that have an actual GM with responsibility? Is BOB such a proven coach that he can demand full autonomy?

I don't care if he leaves. I just don't think him leaving fixes anything. Maybe we should listen to the head coach when he says "I gotta coach better". He got his QBs, his defensive coordinator, the rest of his coaching staff is his, his NT, etc. This is his team. Time to hold him accountable. I totally expect him to turn things around and beat the Colts on Thursday.
