I'm a freshman in college, and I see so many people my age smoking, and I just don't get it. It costs a lot of money It could kill you It makes you smell horrible why do it?
Some people (chicks mostly) smoke since it helps them lose weight. Nicotine is an appetite suppressant.
I smoke hookah. Its a social thing. I don't understand the whole appeal of smoking a pack a day of cigarettes by yourself though or something of that sort. And even when I smoke hookah it's like really occasional. Like once a month at the most.

Chicks that age do smoke to try and stay thin. By the time they're 30 they look like they're 45 and still fat.
Having a pack of cigs on you in social events come in pretty handy at times. Whenever there is an awkward person that youre locked into a conversation with you can always pull out the cigarettes and tell them youre going out for a smoke. End of weird/awkward convo.
Why do you use the word "still" in your question? What has changed that would lead people to not smoke? Have you ever tried a cigarette? Do you know anyone that smokes that you could have asked this question to? Why do people drink alcohol? Why do people smoke pot? Why do people drink caffeine? Do you have any other questions? Why does it matter what other people do? Do you understand what addiction is like? The health effects of smoking did not suddenly become clear recently. People your parents age started smoking with the understanding that cigarettes are not healthy.
