NEW YORK (AP)—The NBA will hold training camp next week with replacement officials, saying the referees union has rejected its final contract offer.

The National Basketball Referees Association has been bracing for a lockout since talks first broke down last week, and lead negotiator Lamell McMorris called it “imminent and unavoidable” after no deal was reached Thursday.

A statement from the NBA on Friday made it clear the lockout was under way.

“It is extremely disappointing that the NBRA has ignored the economic realities, rejected our offer, and left us with no choice but to begin using replacement referees,” executive vice president and general counsel Rick Buchanan said.

I'm eager for change but I just hope it won't be "you never know what you have until you lose it."

I think they were fine on salaries and everything. I think the main point of contention was retirement benefits.

Retirement? Isn't Dick Bavetta like 107 years old?

i see this helping out the rockets......the new refs probably won't even recognize which players are the stars and will therefore not be able to execute the star treatment rules.....and even with tmac we have no stars, ergo.....

Actually, I would think the opposite. I would think replacement refs are more likely to no no one but the stars and be intimidated by them then whine about not getting calls.

I hope none of the replacement refs are Violet Palmer clones. I lose my mind everytime she officiates a Rockets game. Helen Keller could do a better job. ;)

I just wish those refs were as good as they are now during Eurobasket 2009. There is NO flopping in that tournament. One guy tried it during Russia-Croatia game and he was called for a technical foul and than V-Mac tried the same thing and he got a warning.

That's all I am praying for.

Well lets hope the refs have more knowledge than the common fan, who knows who most players are regardless of status.

The NBDL referees are the most logical choice.

Are the NBDL refs in the union also? I would think not, since their payscale is probably much lower.

They can bring in new college referees to work the NBDL league.

Isn't the NBDL, the official development league for referees to get into the NBA anyway?

I think this is a good thing. Hopefully the new set of referees will be more lax on technicals, and "touch" fouls.

I disagree completely. If people thought that refs were bad before, just wait until you get the "backups" in. There's a reason these guys weren't reffing in the league anyway.
