So when Ohio State beats Minnesota and OU is back in the top 25, all of the sudden Baylor will look so much better!

It's really pretty silly...all of it.

Still like it better. Just go to 8, though.

Wait - why is it silly? Right now, Minnesota could be anywhere between a mediocre 7-5 team or an 11-2 Big10 champion. If they are the former, TCU's win looks less impressive. If they are the latter, it looks better.

Wouldn't you want to evaluate TCU differently based on what kind of team Minnesota proves to be?

It's silly because a win against a team looks really good one week...and the team that wins vaults up because of it....

but then later a win against them by another team doesn't look as good because now they've lost that one game, and now the second team has beaten them too.

It's silly transitive property stuff. Particularly among teams that have already played head to head.

I think the entire thing is silly, they shouldn't release these rankings until the end of the year.

But to use a win over a Big 10 school in September while discounting another conference win on the road in November against a team that was ranked 15 at the time as justification for a higher ranking for one team over another when there is a head-to-head matchup already completed is absurd. Not to mention, OU falling out of the top 25 is ridiculous in and of itself.

Not really. They lost pretty much every meaningful game they played (KSU, TCU, and BU), while also barely squeaking by a bad Texas team. They don't have much of a case.

I predict OU will throttle Texas Tech and be ranked in the top 10 come Monday morning.

No one discounts Baylor's win over OU - it vaulted them up from 12 to 7 or wherever they are. But TCU also beat OU.

If you're looking at ranking at the time they played, then you're basically saying preseason rankings matter more than what they do on the field. IF you want to say Baylor beat #15 OU, then TCU beat #4 OU.

TCU has played a better schedule - so far. Baylor has the better win. TCU has the better loss. TCU's current edge is that they've beaten KSU. If Baylor beats KSU also, then everything will sort itself out.

I agree it's silly that there are midseason rankings - there's no need for them until the end of the season. But at the same time, it's just as silly to put any weight into them and worry about where teams are in them when we know its all going to change.

I agree with your last part...that's why I said it's silly. Except that where you are ranked at any point actually can affect how you're ranked at the end. There's a subjective figure skating-esque scoring/ranking system in college football that I tolerate but am not a fan of.

On a side note, there are only three ranked 3-loss teams right now. Each of them has beaten a top 12 opponent. OU hasn't beaten any ranked opponents (0-3). There's really no good reason for them to be ranked - their best win is a 4-loss WVU team.

I think the bold part is more of a concern when just looking at polls. FSU dropping to #3 despite winning and being undefeated seems to suggest that the committee is a bit smarter and more nuanced at looking at teams than the traditional pollsters. They seem to be doing a good job of looking at full-body-of-work rather than just moving teams up and down on a week to week basis.

I think you are missing a category. Namely, the 3-loss ranked team that lost 59-0 to Alabama.

Eh - all the ranked 3 loss teams have a blowout loss. LSU lost 41-7 to Auburn. Utah lost 51-27 to Oregon. Aggies have several blowout losses, including the Alabama one. The unranked OU also was crushed by Baylor.

I'm not sure losing by 59 is really that much bigger a deal than losing by 35. And it's quibbling anyway since both all 4 of those 3 loss teams are ranked in the 20-27 range. Being #26 is not really much different than being #25.

I realize nobody here cares about Clemson, but Deshaun Watson goes down with a knee injury. Very very sad story.

On his first pass, Cole Stoudt throws a pick-6. He just did it again. He's completed as many passes to Ga Tech as to his own receivers.
