Kevin McHale: "We'll Have 4 or 5 Young Guys on our Team"

    During yesterday's Summer League coverage on NBA TV, McHale dropped by the booth (with Brent Barry and some other guy). They were asking him about how he's going to feel with having to coach so many young guys this season.

    McHale responded by saying that we'd have 4 or 5 young guys on the roster this year and that he's going to enjoy the challenge. He says the guys we'll have bring a lot to the table and he's looking forward to working with it.


    Take from that what you will, but I'm starting to believe the Rockets are excited about this young talent and maybe...just MAYBE...aren't willing to give it all away so quickly.

    Maybe McHale sees Jeremy Lamb's 20ppg during SL play and is like

    We have a ton of young guys besides the rookies CF is so excited about, so I wouldn't read too much into it. You could also classify Lin, Asik, and Douglas as "young guys".

    Of course, he did mention Lin as a 'young guy' at only 23 years of age.

    Considering our entire team is full of young guys, you could also take that as we're shipping out half the team for a star and only keeping a 4 or 5.

    I'm HOPING the '4 or 5' guys he's referring to are:

    Chandler Parsons
    Jeremy Lin
    Jeremy Lamb
    Royce White
    D-Mo


    I hope he's not thinking of Asik as a 'young guy'. You know...just for my purposes.

    I was going to say, if the cutoff to 'young' is 25, which is still not in prime, then, currently, lol, we have 2 guys that aren't young =P

    That leaves 13 young guys, here is hoping for a trade, and even then, hoping we keep the promising youth, even knowing it can't happen.

    I am a first time user. Just moved to Houston from Dallas.

    But don't worry. I'm from Houston...born and raised. I was stationed in Dallas for a few years.

    They joked that Patterson and Parsons are the old men on the team now. They're our gray-haired, seasoned veterans lol.

    If we don't end up with Dwight, I'm almost positive K-Mart is out the door. If not during the off-season at least by trade deadline, he's still a decent player for a playoff team plus his expiring will be very valuable around that time.

    Besides him our oldest players, were they to be re-signed, would be Little Earl and Courtney Lee.

    D-Mo and Lamb are the two CAN'T TOUCH studs out there right now.

    ...which probably means they're the first two Les will put in a box and ship to Orlando. :(

    The oldest guy listed on the roster is Earl Boykins, born in 1976.
    Next is KMartin born in 1983.
    Then, CLee and GForbes both born in 1985.
    Followed by TDouglas in 1986.

    In terms of NBA experience, Boykins has been in the league 13 years.
    Martin 8 years.
    Lee 4 years.
    Douglas 3.
    Everyone else is less than 3 years.

    We have 4 rookies right now.
    We have 2 2nd year players
    We have 1 3rd year player
    We have one guy in his prime

    We have another guy in his 3rd year likely coming

    Then we have a bunch of players fighting to make the team.

    4-5 young guys, means we'd be giving some up.

    His expiring contract is attractive to us, too. Especially if we're in rebuilding mode and would like cap space to sign a big name.
