[Vice] NFL's Pink October Doesn't Raise Money for Cancer Research

They make money off it, it's misleading, but ultimately it raises awareness for breast cancer. So it is what it is. Caveat emptor.

 

There are a lot of stories of women getting mammograms because of all of the exposure of NFL breast cancer awareness. It's unbelievable how wide spread it is. You can't glance at the TV screen without seeing pink. They have women before kickoffs greet the people. Are the penalty flags pink now too?

They don't have to do any of this and it's sad that anyone wants to try and turn this around.

 

I don't like the mixture of pro sports with politics, charitable causes, or ethnic celebrations. There are many worthy charities and good causes, but if you celebrate one (for the whole month of October) what about the others? I think it is a slippery slope and pretty soon you have got "domestic violence" month, "black history" month, "hispanic appreciation" month, and ad infinitum. Uniforms will become semi meaningless because they will change colors every month. Then what about ads on the uniforms? Keep sports, sports.

 

They chose breast cancer to hit a specific demographic they weren't strong in. The NFL is a business not a charity. They made a smart business/PR choice. Welcome to America.

 

This may all be true in theory - but fortunately, we actually have reality that we can look at that shows the theory not to hold. The NFL doesn't support a different cause every month. Uniforms don't change colors every month. The idea that if you support one charity/cause, you have to support all others is nonsense - no one does that anywhere.

Anyway, donate to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation instead of Susan Komen. Susan Komen did a great thing in growing awareness, but now the focus needs to be on research and making better use of charitable dollars.

I find it fascinating a sport that is among the most brutal played (and exclusively played by men) chooses a women's disease as its charity of choice.

well, they do celebrate hispanic heritage month (sep.15 - oct 15), but they only do special events in the weeks 3 and 4.

they do special things like putting "fútbol americano" on the field, and do special events, all the 32 teams do something, you can find it here:

Jose Cruz, former Houston Astros player and coach, will lead the Texans out of the tunnel prior to team introductions as the Home Field Advantage Captain.

Mariachi bands and Ballet Folklorico will provide pregame entertainment at stadium entrances and members of the Texans Hispanic Fan Club, Toros Bravos, will hold the Texas flag during pregame festivities.
