    Offense this year - 12th (of 30)
    Last year - 4th

    Defense this year - 17th
    Last year - 19th

Obviously a huge dropoff offensively, but not as big as I would have thought going in.

On the other hand, not much of a gain defensively. I'm surprised by that. The Rockets de-emphasized offense this year, and added size down low as well as increased defensive aptitude at 4 of 5 positions for all or part of the season.

I've thought it all along, but more evidence that letting Rick go was all Leslie's doing. If you want to increase the value of your assets, there's no one better than Rick Adelman at accomplishing that. No one. Daryl would know that.

Dalembert just wasn't that good, which made our front court a lot weaker defensively. Especially considering Patterson had his sophmore slump and we let the Chuck Wagon walk. Camby was a good solution but he was too old and play big minutes.

    Camby came in late..

If he stayed healthy and played throughout the whole season we would have been top 10 on defense..

    Offense...a lot of injuries...but still 12th..

Laying to rest the r****ded idea that Rick was the reason the defense sucked after the rockets lost Yao and deke.

AKA Adelman would've won us more games with Dalembert and Camby and Parsons this year.

The "only thing that matters is wins and losses" camp might retort that despite what those fancy offensive and defensive efficiency stats say, we won 51% of our games this year and 52% of our games last year. Just outside the playoffs, again.

Except that Adelman likely wouldn't of played Parsons. 2nd team at best.

Perhaps you could explain what it means, but in terms of "Expected W-L", the Rockets were 18th this year, as compared to 11th last year.

The Rockets had an average game scoring margin of +2.2 or so last season. Given that average, one would expect them to have won something like 47 games. However, their actual record was barely above .500 because they lost more than their share of close games (which should be 50-50 propositions more or less).

This year, their average game scoring margin is only +0.23. Given this average, one would expect a team to be exactly where they are: 34-32. Their average scoring margin had them ranked behind 17 teams in the league-- but several of these teams were barely above where the Rockets are at-- so it in essence says the Rockets performance is there in a pack of middle-of-the-road teams.

One could say that the Rockets from a year ago were unlucky in their close games (one more random shot going in or bouncing out, one call from ref going the wrong way) could have made the difference in some games. One might also speculate that the player choked or the coach employed the wrong strategy.

Another note on the ranks and how teams are distributed.

The Rockets were ranked 12th offensively, but they were in the middle of a very tight pack (there are less than 1.3 points per 100 possession separating the 9th and 16th ranked teams). In fact, I think they were ranked something like 7th or 8th before the losing streak that killed their playoff chances.

Any any case, the ranking byself should not be viewed without looking at how close or far away the teams are. The Rockets were basically about an average team both offensively (0.9 points per 100 possession above league average) and defensively (0.6 points per 100 possessions below league average).
