Man, I hope his agent knows what he's doing.

Conspiracy theorist in me says that he wants to play for RGV, wait for the inevitable roster clearing trade and rejoin the Rockets.

Something could happen and he might never be offered another NBA deal... $1.5-2 million bucks in the bank sounds pretty good (assuming the first couple years are guaranteed)

The old model, the DM the GM model, has been rendered Parsoned. Agents are refusing those deals in '14.

    How many years guaranteed?

Everybody looks over at Chandler Parsons, and sees themselves as the next coming. Nobody wants to be locked into a deal where they are severely underpaid with no recourse. Covington is obviously confident in his skills.

everything works for the right client situation. Parsons stock was low coming out of college and he wanted to get some guaranteed money in knowing his future might be limited.

Covington is a young player with upside and isn't tethered to 1 team and knows he can dominate the Development League. He's gambling on himself, but recognizes that if he has a halfway decent this year, better offers will avail themselves.

He had a crappy summer league and pre-season. He'll bounce back to have a few good weeks and some team will over pay him.

He should consult Bonzi Wells about this sort of thing.

Covington is flat out terrible. Turning down a 4 year guaranteed deal is plain idiotic on his part.

I don't know. Sure, guys picked in the first half of the second round probably figure they can catch on somewhere regardless. But, undrafted summer camp cast-offs don't have a lot of leverage.

Reality #1 - - it's difficult for the Covingtons of the world to get real shots. The next draftee, the next player traded for always the sexier choice. The Covs' need to get on a roster and hope for the unknown to become known.
