I thought Thibs was going to be a candidate for this job. Maybe the two reunite -- one as head coach, the other as assistant?
No question both JVG and Thibs demand a lot more out of their best players during games... JVG even said it on the telecast last night that the Rockets couldn't afford to rest Howard/Harden all that much. Specifically said, "that's what the off-season is for!!!" Of course, we know that Yao had no off-season... the real reason for his eventual/inevitable injury problems (and seriously, a guy that big was going to have the exact same problems he ended up having, no matter how you handle him). In the end, JVG got Yao to become the dominant center that nobody really gave him a shot at being when he came over here... Yao would probably give JVG the bulk of credit as well. Lastly, I'm not sure where this "coddling of stars" mantra came into vogue... the great ones play their hearts out, and give 150% till their bodies no longer can handle the grind. Magic, Bird, Jordan, Lebron, Kobe, Hakeem, Charles.... none of them ever said "You need to limit my minutes to prolong my career!". Some players are just built for greatness... others will break down.
Vinny D! Vinny Del Negro discussed the New Orleans Pelicans coaching vacancy with general manager Dell Demps, league sources told Yahoo Sports. The Pelicans' opening is the most sought-after in the NBA, largely because of superstar Anthony Davis. Former Houston Rockets and New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy and Golden State assistant Alvin Gentry are the frontrunners for the job, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Del Negro emerged as a candidate based upon his successful five-year run as head coach of the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/source...nny-del-negro-for-coaching-job-003412611.html
Wow, how are they going after retreads like Vinny Del Negro, Jeff Van Gundy and Scott Skiles? They must've really hated Monty Williams.

Alvin Gentry would be the best pick, imo. That's no knock on JVG or Del Negro, but he's done an amazing job with the Warriors from the looks of things.
gentry will be the hottest coach on the market after they win the championship. its natural that he gets the most sought after job. JVG will be back with ESPN. he wont come back to coaching for any other current vacancy.
JVG is much like Thibs, great defensively but nothing offensively. They both like to slow the game down and unecessarily grind games out. The game doesn't favor that style of play anymore. Those old Knick teams are a thing of the past
If they have teams capable of running, they run. If they don't, they slow it down. They're all disicples of Pat Riley who coached both ways... just depends on personnel.
Agreed. This is why I think Thibs needs at least a year or two away from coaching to refresh and rethink.
If I remember right, the 2005 team with Sura, Barry and company did all sorts of running and attacking when they could. But I think JVG generally plays to his personnel, and when you have a slow-footed dominant center, you mostly have to slow the game down or you neutralize your biggest strength.
Thanks for repeating what I just said two posts up... Also, back in 2004 JVG was consistently BEGGING Francis to run the ball up the court and play faster. Also, the Rockets weren't that much faster under Adelman... so you're right that having Yao automatically slowed the Rockets down moreso than the JVG "style".
Teams that still play sound/consistent defense will always have a chance to contend... and it also helps if you have a dominant big man who's very very young.
Exactly. JVG plays to the players. And since he's always had dominant centers, he correctly plays a half court game with strong defense. But then, as you say, he was always waving Francis to run and he finally did run with TMac, Sura, Wesley, Barry, James, etc
