You should be able to get a Core i7 with SSD and 8-16GB of memory for about $850-900. Also, don't forget to check out the graphics chip. If you don't want to play games, you can save money and get an integrated Intel chipset like the Intel 4000 or 4400. They still play games decently and help save battery life. I'd personally always get a laptop that cost with a 3D chipset. Right now nVidia is leading the pack over ATI in that regard.

I am not sure if I agree with this statement. I can tell a difference between a dual core and a quad core, especially if you're using MSOffice products.

Usually the difference is not that much more. But again, I think its better to spend the money up front on things you can't upgrade vs things you can upgrade later.

Got my wife a Lenovo Yoga 13" for Xmas and she loves it. Touchscreen is very responsive, and the tent mode is perfect for traveling.

Anybody tried the Chromebook Pixel yet?

I have one of the crappier models ($250), but I love it.

First, you need to realize that there are dual core and quad core i7s available on the mobile space. Just because it's an i7 doesn't mean it will be quad core. Gotta pay attention to the M or QM on the model number. Otherwise, that i7 is just a higher clocked dual core i5 with a bit more cache.

Correct. That is why I specified dual/quad vs i5/i7. I wouldn't recommend a dual i7 over an i5 unless the price was pretty close to the same.

You should get the Razer Blade, best value for money imo.

Very helpful thread, I'm in the same boat. Checked out most of the recommended, the lenovo yoga is nice. The Sony VAIO flip is super sharp but non of you recommend it.

I also really like the Sony VAIO, based on looks, but it looks like most reviews from best buy were complaints..

I also really like lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon
