I'm riding a bicycle across America in the Spring. Starting from my home in Coney Island, New York and will arrive in Los Angeles. As ridiculous as it sounds, I'm embarking on this journey with absolutely 0 long-distance cycling training or any knowledge of living off land. It's a personal challenge, and I'm doing it for charity. (Haven't decided which one yet)

Does anyone have any experience with cycling? What kind of bike is optimal for going long distances? Also, aside from necessities, what are some must-haves along the way?

To those who think I'm blowing hot air, I'm starting in mid-April and hope to reach California by mid-June. I'll post pictures of my trip if I survive.

Feel free to leave charity suggestions here and I'll look into them. Thanks.

I don't reckon you will be living off the land? However that is quite the feat without training.

i know people who have done stuff like this - they were all very experienced riders and the stories i heard were full of unexpected difficulties. even your bike repair skills would have to be pretty advanced. not saying you couldnt do it, but did you consider that you might be straight trippin?

    Sounds awesome.

Are you doing this alone or with other riders?

How many of you will be making the journey? Don't forget to stock up them ipod breh. May I suggest "The final countdown" instrumental or "Eye of the tiger" on an infinite loop so your whole trip will feel epic.

I assume you don't have a 9-5 job and can take time off at will. Envy becomes of me.

I've been working overnights and start school back up in September. So I'm going for it while I have the opportunity.

    Jacoby Herman?....hmm not bad...

Seriously though since you don't have much experience with long distance riding, perhaps a bike with a motor might be a wise choice. It would be good to have as a back-up, in case of an emergency. I'm jealous! Good Luck!

If you're going to be taking pictures , make sure you represent!

    Where will you sleep?

Where will you charge your phone?

How will you do live updates for your charity pics?

Are you capable of biking on interstates?

Can we take some action on this? I'm going to bet that you do not accomplish this feat.

People that do heroin don't accomplish much unless there is a guitar in their hand.

It should be a great experience. And really it shouldn't be that hard to do. Bikes are an extremely efficient way to get around.

So you're starting your trip right when the playoffs begin? For shame.

I'm only departing if we play Portland again. Can't go through that again...

Seriously though, I didn't even think of that. I guess I'll stop by bars at night and catch games. As lame as it sounds, I have little faith in our team for a playoff run as it stands today.

I don't know anything about actual touring, but you'd be looking at a touring bike. They're usually steel for reliability and its ability to absorb road bumps. They have a more upright riding position so you can churn the miles away. They also have all the nooks and crannies so you can mount fenders and a crazy amount of baggage.

The most popular touring bike is probably the Surly Long Haul Trucker, but this is something you'll want to test ride, and that all depends on the brands carried by your local dealers.
