Have any of you been out to see the races? Smarty Jones has me hooked... I know they're doing quarterhorse races right now...anyone seen those??? Thinking about going Saturday night. I don't plan on gambling..at least not much..just to watch the horses. Any suggestions???
http://www.shrp.com/ I've never actually been there though, it's just too far from where I live. I have passed through many times though
I've been a few times. I prefer the dogs over the horses for entertainment and gambling but I much prefer the horse track to the dog track because the dog track seems a little seedy. I've taken my kids out to watch the horses but not out to the dogs for that reason. As far as gambling goes I have most luck with trifecta boxes. If you are going to gamble do some research on the types of bets available or you are just throwing money out the window.
I have been there many times. It is a nice track, and it is very clean, since nobody goes! The quarter horse races are all sprints where they just run one straightaway rather than a full lap. It's still fun, and IMHO there are more upsets and longshots that come in during the quarter horse races since the races are much shorter in distance. If you can, try to get into the Jockey Club. They have a nice buffet in there, plus waiter service for your drinks and a private betting window.
I've been there once for oriental night like 6 years ago, since there was free cover and decent food everywhere. My parents wanted us to go since it was just another chance for family outing. Overall it was fun, I still don't get why the odds on the horses change as you get close to the actually race, makes me mad since it affected your betting decision. I would say always do a bet on the dark horse since one of them always seems to win every other race. The favorites almost never win any races. But I was like 12 at the time so my memories might be foggy.
if you ever want to get even with your enemies teach them how to bet the horses... if you go and want to bet other tracks around the country stay away from Hawthorne,Santa Anita, and Belmont. their payouts are not that great. Retama northeast of San Antonio has some of the best when they're running.
Sam Houston Race Park's summer concert series is back as well. I think Jerry Jeff Walker plays this Friday. Somebody different every Friday. Watch the horses, then watch a concert.
Lone Star Park in Grand Prarie gets the freaking Breeders' Cup this year!!!! I'd be going....but it's around the due date for my second child...so I think that rules it out. Would probably be my last chance to see Smarty run.
Look like they have a Texas Music Revolution show every Friday. Lineup: Jerry Jeff Walker Friday, June 11 Charlie Robison Friday, June 18 Johnny Lee Friday, June 25 Lorrie Morgan Friday, July 2 Bellamy Brothers Friday, July 9 Cory Morrow Friday, July 16 Little Texas Friday, July 23 Roger Creager Friday, July 30 Don Williams Friday, August 6 Emerson Drive Friday, August 13 Craig Morgan Friday, August 20 Cross Canadian Ragweed Friday, August 27 Sammy Kershaw Friday, September 3
I love it! I've been to Sam Houston about four or five times and had a lot of fun each and every time.
We took our 2 year old to the track and he loved it. Except when he saw the jockeys on the horses up close during the parade to the post. He kept saying "I go. I go" and was rather bummed that I wouldn't let him have a ride.
that's awesome!!! did you take him during the day?? evening?? thinking i'll take my 4 year old sometime in the fall when it cools down...to see the thoroughbreds!!!
off Fairbanks and BattleOak....we are selling and looking to buy inside the Woodwind Lakes Subdivision...Where do you live my brotha?
I love going to the track ... You can bet a mere $2 on each race and it is still a lot of fun to watch. The only thing I don't like is the 20 minutes between races. By the 7th or 8th race it seems more like 45 min.
i hear ya. it's just not about the betting with me, though. i don't need to have a stake to enjoy the competition. but i ultimately said, i don't think i'll bet much. i'm sure i'll lay down a couple.
