Fox Buys College Comedy From Weezer Frontman Rivers Cuomo & ‘Psych’ Creator Steve Franks As Put Pilot

Psych creator Steve Franks has teamed with rock musician Rivers Cuomo for DeTour, a single-camera comedy inspired by the Weezer frontman’s real-life experiences. The project, from 20th Century Fox TV, has landed at Fox with a put pilot commitment. DeTour centers on a thirtysomething rock star who, unable to rationalize his success and worried that he may not have the tools to repeat it, walks away from the spotlight at the height of his fame in an effort to rediscover the parts of his life he missed while he was busy becoming a massive success.

Cuomo attended Harvard University on and off from 1995 to 2006. To complete his bachelor of arts in English, Cuomo took a sabbatical from his successful rock career eight years ago to return to Harvard full time, living in the dorms and eating in the cafeteria. He tried out for the school choir and didn’t get in, he made friends, met his wife, and went on to graduate c*m Laude. The series would mirror and embellish Cuomo’s journey with a fictional character and the small band of misfit friends that make it possible for one another to get through these formative years. ICM Partners-repped Franks executive produces DeTour with Tagline Television’s Chris Henze (Psych) and Willie Mercer. Cuomo and manager Dan Field will also serve as executive producers.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Weezer’s eponymous debut album, aka The Blue Album. The band, which has sold 20 million records to date, will be releasing their next studio album October 7.

Psych was excellent, I'm expecting a lot of 90s referential humor. But always worried about Fox and its sitcoms.
