I personally think he needs to go. With Dorsey signing, who will be a defensive specialist at the PF position like Chuck, rebound like chuck but is 2 inches taller and is MUCH more athletic than Chuck. Therefore, he can finish under the rim unlike chuck missing open layups because he can't do standing dunks. Both of them are bad at FTs so it doesn't matter. Bottom line, there's really no point in keeping the guy with dorsey signing, even if he doesn't have NBA experience, he can't be any worse than chuck with his upsides. Furthermore, Artest can play PF and can defend just as well as Chuck at that position but he could score as well. Hayes and Head are two of the players that the Rockets should find ways of trading.

    devin,

Dorsey hasn't done a damn thing in the NBA...yet.

At least Adelman knows what he's getting when he inserts Chuck into the game.

If Joey comes on, sure we might look at this again mid season.

When Dorsey was draft, morey said he was suppose to be an immediate help on the frontcourt and not a project like Greene. I can't see him be any worse off than an undersize 6'6'' undrafted hayes.

chuck is worth more to us than any other team in the league. if he's ever traded, it will be the last you hear about him.

to the rockets he's a former starter, and morey will tell you that he's one of the best defenders at his position in the league, statistically speaking. however, other teams will see a 6'6 PF who can't make a layup or ft.

he's on a reasonable contract and doesn't care about riding the pine as an insurance policy. playing next to yao covers most of his weaknesses.

really, no one else sees what we see in him. better off keeping him.

I cant imagine our Rocket team without Chuck so I wouldnt support him leaving. Chuck Hayes is someone who deserves to win a ring hear. He is the foundation of this Rockets team when it comes to toughness. C'mon man dont hate on the Chuck-wagon.

It's possible those are the players that the Rockets look to ship out to cut some costs. They'll likely be way down in the depth chart.

I just have a feeling that the Rockets (the front office, and the coaching staff) like what Chuck brings to the table too much to let him go just for cutting salary. While they have faith in Dorsey, as the above poster said he's still very much unproven on both ends at the NBA level.

I think the Rockets hang on to Chuck for the season, if for nothing else as insurance in case of injury.

Hayes is a proven elite post defender and you think rookie Dorsey can replace him right away?

Morey would say that because that's just the right thing to say.

And are you forgetting Richard Dorsey is only 6'8? ;)

Still better than 6'6. :D 2 inches height advantage is pretty significant especially for big men. And you know, at 6'6 hayes has got to be the shortest big men in the NBA. No puns intended.

He def. plays bigger than 6'6 though, and has proven to be able to slow down good post players.

well, it's not like morey would say "err he's not going to perform well, i don't know why i picked him" I've never seen or heard a gm ever second guess his pick, even when it's matt millen drafting 3 wide receivers in the 1st round 3 years in a row.

Common logic aside, there is no harm in keeping Chuck. He's not the type of player to gripe about playing time, or is he the type of player to gripe about money. I don't know the exact numbers of his contract, but I'm willing to bet that it's one of the lowest on the team. Getting rid of him likely won't get us under the luxury tax, so it definitely is not a money issue. BUT what Chuck brings, and I'm sure Hayesfan will agree with me, is a top 10 defensive big man in the league. Look it right here, with all of Chuck's offensive deficiencies, he makes up for his defensive efficiencies and court presence. Contrary to what most people think, he helps Yao a lot in sealing his man from the offensive boards. It's not an aberration that two years ago when he was the starter that the rockets finished 52-30.

Not saying Dorsey won't become the better player in the future because I see him in being a Ben Wallace player, but the rockets are in a "win now" mode. We cannot take chances with ruining team chemistry or getting rid of a player who we know exactly what we're getting for an unproven rookie that seems like a mystery to what position he'll play. Hopefully if we make a serious playoff run, I'd trust Chuck to make a key defensive play over Dorsey just because I know he can be counted on based on experience.

For a player that requires no harm in keeping, there's no reason to simply get rid of him. The more players the merrier. If we get rid of him, we lose a portion of our versatility. And that's the beauty of the current ensemble of players on the Rockets.

He has fairly long arms which is why he does well even though he's shorter than most plus he's just strong.

I had said at the beginning of the summer that Luther and Chuck would likely be possible trade candidates, however that it would be a trade deadline move rather than a summer roster move.

I think Dorsey has the potential to do well, but I am pretty sure he's going to have to earn his pt much like Landry did last year.

Lets put it this way, if Dorsey does prove during the season that he can defend and rebound well in the NBA at the PF position, Chuck hayes will definitely be the odd men out. If thats the case, i hope to see hayes and head traded for an expiring contract and cash.

I think Chuck makes over 2 million a year. I know what he brings in the table, but if we signed dorsey for less and he can do the same thing (and more, with his upside) there's no reason to keep chuck.

honestly, as bad as he is in freethrow and how undersized he is, hes still really underrated in my opinion and good to keep, cause hes just one of those guys who works hard and never complains, we need that on a team. thats what everybody keeps forgetting

Scola, Landry, and Dorsey all figure to be ahead of him in the rotation at PF. Hayes may remain on the team, but he wont see the court much.

I am one of those posters who originally said about Dorsey....I never saw what was so great about him (becoming another Ben Wallace) and judging from the pre-draft analyst and bb critics ....most of them didn't either. More of filler. I think he is just overrated on this board. Posters say that Greene was project, while Dorsey could step in right away...although Greene projected to go as high as #10 in the 1st Round. Then, a team actually gave up an all-star for him. I can't see a team doing that for Dorsey, he's undersized, unproven, and over confident. I could see someone like Donte, being a bit more cocky, because he could be really good player in the next year or so.

Hayes is proven and is great as back up, he can guard most PFs in this league. He's a great tool for bench. If I could put package and get decent player back...I would trade Dorsey and Landry for guard who can score. Because, both aren't going to see any big minutes, anyway. Do them a favor trade him to Charlotte or Knicks and gets us decent young guard or possibly a draft pick.
