The question then becomes that if Altuve continues to develop/improve/hold his own at 2B, does the organization consider moving Deshields back to CF (presuming he continues to improve as well)? Then where do you move Springer presuming he pans out?

These are GOOD problems that most organizations of depth deal with on a yearly basis... the Astros are barely scratching the surface of "depth", but its good to have the conversation nonetheless.

Maybe so. He also hasn't taken a walk in his last 6 games...but is hitting .357 in that stretch (10/28), getting 2 hits in 5 games. I had a fear that moving him to 8 would possibly have him swinging more since he'll get less in the zone.

I don't think you try to move either one. I believe Luhnow put out there earlier this year that they want prospects to play the position that they are most likely to suceed in, not necessarily at the position in which the major-league team may have a need. I think this is the right way to go. If both Altuve and DeShields are deserving of being the starter at 2B in a few years, then we can trade one to fill another need in the organization.

Jason Schwartz, the Lancaster play-by-play man, mentioned last night that Dan Adamson was released. Surprised a bit as to why they went with the outright release route without sending him to Lexington or extended ST, as he put up some decent-to-good numbers in Tri-City and Lexington with the catch that he was old for each level. I'm guessing the injury that shelved him last year did him in. Well, he's the highest drafted player from the 2010 class (20th round) that's been cut loose so far.

right, or you can move deshields back to center way down the line in high A's, or even once he reaches the major league level (think craig biggio), if need be.

his bat coming around is what is most important, obviously. he's an athlete. adjusting from 2nd base back to cf shouldn't be a problem for him, if the situation arises.

Agreed... but the reason Deshields was moved from CF to 2B was because 2B was a "position of need" when he was drafted. This was just prior to Altuve's bust-out season, and he hasn't showed any signs of slowing down in his career (albeit brief).

Collin DeLome, the last remnant of the draft that will forever live in infamy, has been released.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>With the release of Collin Delome, the Astros 2007 draft class has been erased completely from existence.</p>&mdash; Jayne (@whattheheck57) <a href="https://twitter.com/whattheheck57/status/192390325694767105" data-datetime="2012-04-17T23:13:22+00:00">April 17, 2012</a></blockquote>

    Stories of the Night

Everything that's been going wrong for Tanner Bushue this season went wrong once again today. He seriously needs an extended vacation, because his stuff's either gone, or he's hurting and not telling anyone.

It was not a night to remember for Corpus Christi.

Welcome to Lancaster, Domingo Santana. Warmly welcome.

    Recap

OKC's series opener with Nashville got rained out. Doubleheader will be on Thursday. Dallas Keuchel was scheduled to pitch tonight.

Corpus... where to begin. They faced last year's MiLB strikeout king, Edwar Cabrera (and Tulsa) tonight, and proceeded to embarrass themselves offensively. Cabrera (who looks a little bit older than 24) probably played a big role in that, but well, the Hooks didn't have a baserunner until the 9th, when Chris Wallace, of all people, legged out an infield single. He provided the only hit in a 4-0 loss. Ross Seaton got the start tonight... in 7 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (solo homer and a 2-run shot), walked 2, and struck out 4. Admirable effort, although he gets the loss for his trouble.

    Judge for yourself.

Lancaster exploded for 9 runs in the 2nd to erase a 3-0 deficit to High Desert and shut down the Mavericks after that, cruising to an 11-3 win. Everyone had a hit and scored at least once, except for Rene Garcia, who did neither. Everyone had at least 1 RBI except for Telvin Nash and Garcia. Adam Bailey went deep for the first time this year with a solo shot in the 5th. Bailey, Jonathan Meyer, and Domingo Santana each scored twice. R.J. Alaniz had a bare minimum quality start, allowing 8 hits, didn't walk anyone, and struck out 7. I approve.

The Jethawks batted around in the 2nd and battered the Mavs in the process. After a Meyer single, Santana went deep for a long-awaited first homer of the season. Jio Mier smacked an RBI double scoring Enrique Hernandez, then came home on a George Springer sac fly. After Telvin Nash's single moved Adam Bailey to 2nd, Bailey came home on a double from Erik Castro. He and Nash came home on Meyer's 2nd single of the inning. Meyer came home on a Hernandez single, and Santana scored the last run in the inning on an error.

Lexington put up 6-6-6 on the board tonight in a 10-6 loss to Greenville. Tanner Bushue was shelled once again. It has just been a flat-out ugly start to his season. In 2 innings of work, he allowed 6 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits (3-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 2. He also committed 2 errors. Also going through an excruciating start is Mike Kvasnicka, who had a golden sombrero tonight. On the bright side, Zach Johnson hit his 3rd homer this season, a 2-run shot in the 4th. His 16 RBIs puts him in a tie for 1st in the Sally League (and all of low Class A) with Matt Skole of Hagerstown. He's also tied with 8 others in the league for 5th with 3 homers, since there's a 4-way tie at 4 for the lead. Jimmy Howick added an RBI double in the 5th, and Jordan Scott added an RBI groundout in the same inning. Also scoring on that play was Delino DeShields, albeit on an error by Greenville shortstop Jose Vinicio. Emilio King scored in the 6th when Howick grounded into a double play.

DeShields went 2-5 with 2 steals and 2 Ks. He bumped his total up to 8 stolen bases, which puts him in a 3-way tie for 1st with 2 Lakewood players (he has yet to be caught), and 2nd in all of low Class A to Lansing's Markus Brisker.

Congratulations, Albert Cartwright. You are the last player from the Astros' 2007 draft that is still with a minor league team.

And with that, the ghost of Tim Purpura has (hopefully) been removed.

The 2007 draft was filled with players that looked amazing in Lancaster. What a joke of a team.

I'm not fully sold on him offensively. He's not the most patient guy and has always had a high strikeout rate, but I admit... 18 in 37 at-bats is ridiculous. He did well at the plate last year, but behind his numbers was a stroke of good luck. A .355 BABIP was substantially higher than the league average of .314. 14.5% of his flyballs to the outfield resulted in homers, compared to 9% for the rest of the Sally League. He had a higher line-drive and groundball percentage (23.4% and 47.9% respectively) than average (16.4% and 42.8%), and his overall flyball percentage (22% to the outfield, 3.5% pop flies) was well below average (29.2% and 7.2%). His true form offensively wasn't last year and definitely isn't what he's doing now. He's somewhere in between, although he's decidedly a mediocre-to-average offensive player.

Got a cannon for an arm, though. Probably one of the best in the system.

Telvin Nash just hit his 7th homerun. A mammoth shot. He leads all minor leaguers in home runs.

He will be a perennial 30-homer threat as the DH.

This guy could be the next Ryan Howard. The great thing is that he's hitting legit homeruns and not Jon Gaston homeruns.

    Stories of the Morning

Jonas Dufek leaves his start early in Lexington.

Dallas Keuchel with his worst start of the season. How did he fare?

Story of Lancaster vs. High Desert

    Beast.

    Recap

Dallas Keuchel had his worst start of the season. Well, if you consider a line of 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, and 3 K bad, then yeah, he wasn't particularly sharp today. He induced 8 groundouts and 3 flyouts today. Another great start for the southpaw as OKC took out Nashville 7-5. Keuchel improves to 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA as he's just owned the PCL.

Justin Ruggiano went 3-4 and his solo shot in the 2nd, his 2nd of the year, put OKC on the board first. J.B. Shuck went 1-5 and scored on a wild pitch in the 3rd. Brian Bixler was 2-5 and scored twice. He led off the 5th with his 2nd homer of the season, and later in the inning, Scott Moore, who went 2-3, got in on the act as he swatted his 2nd of the year, which was a 2-run homer scoring Fernando Martinez. Martinez went 2-4 with an RBI single in the 6th that sent Bixler, who hit a leadoff triple, home. Martinez came home on a Brett Wallace RBI groundout. Juan Abreu was roughed up in the 8th as he served up a 2-run shot to Brooks Conrad, and Jose Valdez allowed an unearned run in the 9th, but he was able to get the save.

Corpus was off today. They're heading home to start a 4-game series with Frisco. Jose Cisnero will take the mound against former Aggie Barret Loux for a 7:05 start.

Lancaster took out High Desert 8-6 to complete a 4-2 homestand.... And Telvin Nash goes deep again! His 7th homer in 13 games!!!! It was a solo shot in the 6th that made it a 4-3 game. The Jethawks still trailed, but they would score 6 unanswered in a stretch that began with Nash's homer and ended after the 8th inning. In the 7th, Rene Garcia successfully laid down a sac bunt with 2 strikes to spark the rally. He moved Domingo Santana to 3rd and Enrique Hernandez to 2nd. Jio Mier went 2-4 with a 2-run double in the 7th and an RBI single in the 3rd. Domingo Santana's 2-run single in the 8th more or less sealed the game. George Springer went 0-3 with a sac fly and 2 strikeouts to drop his average to .226.

Zach Grimmett got the start tonight, and in 6 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 9 hits (solo homer and 2-run homer) and struck out 6. Jose Trinidad got the victory, pitching a scoreless 7th. Jorge De Leon pitched a scoreless 8th, nearly blew it in the 9th by allowing 2 runs, but escaped with a save.

Lexington had their 2nd 9:30 AM game of the season, coming up short 4-2 against Greenville. Jonas Dufek had to leave with 2 outs in the 2nd after getting struck on the arm by a line drive. He didn't allow a hit, walked 2, and struck out 2. Nathan Pettus came in and pitched admirably, aside from issuing 4 walks. The Legends actually had a no-hitter going... until Pettus lost the no-hitter by allowing a double to Blake Swihart to lead off the 6th. He then walked the next 2 guys to load the bases. Dayan Diaz came in and allowed all 3 inherited runners to score, which resulted in Pettus getting tagged with the loss. Scott Zuloaga allowed a solo homer in the 9th to David Renfroe that iced the game at 4-0. Matt Duffy clubbed a 2-run homer (his 1st) in the bottom half to cut the deficit in half, but that was all the offense the Legends could conjure up. He had 3 of Lexington's 6 hits today.

Greenville starter Matt Barnes, a former teammate of George Springer's at UConn, shut down the Legends to the tune of 6 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 9. He has yet to allow a run in 16 innings, allowing 6 hits, walking 2, and striking out 25 in that span.

Wouldn't surprise me if he hits 50 one day, assuming he becomes good enough to play everyday

Will be waiting to find out what happened to Paul Clemens.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Someone (*cough* AstrosCounty *cough*) missed my post on Dan Adamson's release yesterday. Paul Clemens to DL was posted today. Just FYI:)</p>&mdash; Jayne (@whattheheck57) <a href="https://twitter.com/whattheheck57/status/192997733982945280" data-datetime="2012-04-19T15:27:00+00:00">April 19, 2012</a></blockquote>
    <script src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

    Tonight's Games:

OKC will send out Jordan Lyles in Game 1 of their doubleheader against Nashville, who will counter with Josh Butler. Sergio Perez and Brian Baker will oppose each other in Game 2.

Jose Cisnero will start Corpus Christi's series opener against Frisco and former Aggie Barret Loux.

Lancaster's pitcher is to be determined. Wild guess, but I'm going with Bobby Doran as tonight's starter.

Nick Tropeano takes the mound for Lexington as they're in Kannapolis tonight. Opposing him will be the man who dueled him to a draw, Kevin Vance.

MiLB.com article on Jio Mier. It may be the Cali League, but I'm encouraged with his progress. He's definitely gotten his career back on track.
