The JJ Watt contract is looking like the STEAL of the Century. Fletcher Cox of the Eagles gets $103 million over 6 years, $63 million guaranteed. He has 22 career sacks over 4 years....JJ has 74.5 over 5. All these recent D-Linemen contracts and the rumor of what Von Miller wants should have every Texans fan thanking Rick Smith for signing JJ to that BARGAIN-Basement $100 million dollar contract with only $51.8 million guaranteed.

We should be thanking J.J. Watt. Thank you J.J. Watt for the "team friendly" deal! ;)

most sought out qb in the off season, best running back in the market. Any other team, say the broncos, get those 2 guys they'd be hailed kingmakers.

they still have to do it out on the field though or it will be fire everyone.

Cap goes up salaries go up. He had the biggest deal when he signed it. NFL players are just dumb. They are worst paid athletes but take the most risk.

Exactly. Right about the cap, right about the biggest deal, right about NFL players being dumb and the worst paid not only taking the most risk in any sport but in THE MOST LUCRATIVE LEAGUE in the world.

On the flip side of things, if I were a gm for another franchise, Id give the players the "youre not better than JJ, so what makes you think youre getting paid better than JJ?"

    Rick Schit deserves nothing.

Um...JJ could have waited. He knew the cap was going up. The Texans also knew. So they offered him a deal he couldn't refuse at the time...Highest paid defensive player in history. Rick Smith knew that deal would be a bargain in a couple of years. JJ could have waited. However, when someone offers you that contract, you can't refuse it. It was a smart move by the Texans.

BTW....they are the worst paid athletes by risk, but they also have the biggest rosters. They are double in roster size than any other sport. You are not going to have the contract sizes as large as basketball.....less people to pay. Only certain amount players get huge contracts in most sports....besides basketball. Even in basketball, most players make between 3-8 million a year. A percentage of revenues goes to the players..........which will change in the next CBA....is locked.

Sadly, if we get a season from hell Rick Smith will be the scapegoat.

Rick Smith is a genius. A lot of hacks on this board think they are smarter than him just because he is a person of color.

Lol like Uncle Bob would've let Rick not pay JJ.

Thank JJ Watt for being the only non QB to actually live up to his contract.

    Oh please cut the crap.

Rick Smith's lighting in a bottle moment - drafting J.J. Watt - was in fact all Wade Phillips. He fought tooth and nail with Rick and Kubiak who an wanted an offensive linemen instead.

The rest of Smith's draft highlight reel is littered with blunders from Amobi to Clowney. One "good on paper" off-season does not grant him immunity from the criticism he deserves. In the ranks of GMs, Smith is still the bottom tier.

Interesting point on this, especially relevant to me because HR, I heard one of the former football players on 790 talking about how the none guaranteed contracts came about in the NFL.

    Dues Checkoff

Some of the clowns in the NFL didn't want to have their NFLPA dues automatically subtracted from their pay and somehow none guaranteed contracts was the concession that was negotiated.

    Insane

LOL....every team has draft misses. Smith has had as many hits as anyone in the last 10 years. Cushing, Mercilus, Brown, Hopkins, Kevin Johnson, Watt, Kareem Jackson, Hal, Brandon Brooks, Derek Newton, Jared Crick,Connor Barwin, etc.......

Rick Smith actually ranks in around 14-15 in GM rankings.......
