What's pathetic to me is that the ALSA only uses 7% of the donated money to fund ALS research. They use triple that on ALS fundraising events and salaries.
While I agree that most of the funds don't go directly to research, I still give them props for bringing awareness and creating an effective campaign. Though I'm not here to argue, I did do a bit of research on the 7% and there's been a lot of debate. My father died of ALS and I think all this is BS. Just people doing something to show that they did something. Which ends up being a bunch of nothing. No money in a cure for anything... ALS, cancer are all moneymakers for the hospitals and big Pharma.
Shots fired by KJ! Get him dream! Again! It would be epic if Dream taped himself about to do the challenge and just smacked it out the way and said "Remember that KJ? I think I'll just donate. " Sorry for your loss, but perhaps that's made you somewhat biased. Either way, a lot of people are genuinely doing this for what they think is a good cause. They may never know how much it'll help, if at all, but it is definitely raising raising money and awareness. I would just say, please don't simply dismiss something like this as bias, while there are lots of info out there you can verify for you to judge. In my humble opinion, for example, I seriously believe life expectancy in the US would be more in line with other first rate countries in the world, if medical care is not privatized. Also, please don't assume that owners of our infrastructures are simply here to help. All of them have self-interests, and most of the time it won't coincide with ours. Think if prevalent in our society are cheaper ways to treat or PREVENT diseases, instead of prescription based environment where only a handful gets cared for, who are likely chained to long-term prescriptions, all the while better treatments are likely available for less cost? If you can simply look at what is happening real-world, I believe that leads to less bias than simply assuming that ppl are here to help you and assume things are good.
But yea, I agree most ppl do this and think its a good cause. Most probably donate quite a few bucks while catching on this fad, so as a campaign, this is successful. U r right we may not know how much the money actually helps, so are they trying to help ALS patients, or are they trying to get in on the social media fun? The campaign is raising money from many ppl who would otherwise not contribute. But what is the campaign trying to do with 7% funding and awareness raised? Who does it help most? I haven't looked into it yet but these should be good starting questions.
I don't completely disagree^^ I'm just saying, it's not fair to downplay the entire challenge and the efforts of people involved, just because we think the money isn't going to help cure or treat ALS. A lot of people genuinely care and think they're doing a good thing.
Oh yeah, that's why there will never be something like a vaccine for Polio. I mean, you know how much money the hospitals are making off of people living in Iron Lungs? Polio is a gold mine! Why would they sell a cheap vaccine when an Iron Lung cost as much as a brand new house? ..oh wait
