You're making assumptions of their race and hypotheticals.

If you read what I said, you'd know I agree.

Trespassing is a crime and Mrs. Allen can charge them if she likes. The story reads to me as curious and mischievous teens rather than burglars, but I do acknowledge that it's hard to ascertain their true intentions.

From another article, it stated they entered through a backdoor that had a broken lock. I can't really fault the Allens as they didn't negligently leave a door unlocked.

Your motive for trespassing doesn't apply to everyone else who trespasses. And personal insults don't add much to any discussion.

Trespassing is a criminal offense, but you can't say for certainty they were there to loot the place.

The parents of these teens are willing to do the right thing and correct their kids' criminal mistake. They were upfront and made an official statement at the police station before they were even considered suspects. Had they not done that, Mrs. Allen may not have been able to identify any of the intruders and these teens might not have ever been caught for trespassing.

I think that the Allens should take that into consideration and can resolve this privately between the families. I don't think the parents will ever let them live it down or forget about it. It looks like they have good, honest parents that will teach them a lesson, and I don't think they'll commit a similar crime again.

Well, I think this makes sense. My own neighbor's son is a policeman. But, imagining his son was 20 years younger and did something like break into my house, I wouldn't want to press charges just because of my personal relationship with my neighbor. I'd want some penance though. But, it's not clear that any of the perps lived next door. If it was just the neighbor's punk friends, no mercy.

Actually, when I was a kid some punk friends of mine and my brother's broke into our house. I don't know how my parents resolved it, but no one was charged. Probably should have been though, damn punks.

 

The kids should have been shot, regardless of race. MRS Allen shouldn't have random people sneak in her house.
