At times throughout the year, some posters start threads to pose a trade idea. If lots of people post trade ideas, it clutters up the forum, so we decided in 2006 to try to have one thread for "random trade ideas" that are not based on news involving the Rockets. They are simply, "What do you think about... " scenarios.

Here are the rules of the "Random Trade Idea" thread.

    1) Keep your trade ideas realistic. We all know why the Rockets would want Danny Granger or Chris Paul ... but try to ask the question "Why does it make sense for the other team?"

    2) Don't be a jerk. There are going to be unrealistic scenarios posted ... just point out to them why it couldn't happen, if you feel so inclined. Report the post as ludicrous if you must, but don't nuke the poster and call them names. It spirals the thread down.

Take out Chase and Hill, and give them the second of the two NY picks.

Jordan Hill + Jared Jeffries for Charlie Villenueva.

Detroit can forget about their team on the court for the next few years as they try to rebuild, and Charlie's only blocking Monroe from getting PT. We get more skilled bodies to match up against LA's giants.

Aaron Brooks + Jared Jeffries + David Anderson for Steve Nash.

Phoenix is realistic about its chances this year and attempts to acquire its PG of the future by extending Aaron Brooks at 9M per for 5 years once they trade for him. They've always wanted him since the draft; now's their chance and also their chance to do Steve Nash right by giving him another shot or two at the title.

Kyle Lowry, Trevor Ariza, our 2012 NYKnicks pick for Danny Granger, Dahntay Jones.

(Would have to be midseason since we can't trade Lowry so soon after signing.) Indiana covets Lowry and would be getting back a not-so-bad downgrade in Ariza as well as another great asset in the 2012 pick. Dahntay Jones represents a salary dump for Indiana but may have utility in Houston as a PG-stopper, although we would still need to find another pure PG to replace Lowry. This would be the best way for the Pacers to look towards the future, and while the Rockets would be surrending a valuable commodity in Lowry, we would be getting back a tangible upgrade at SF without losing any other piece in the starting lineup. The rotation would thus shrink to our starters + Miller, Budinger, and the better of Patterson/Hill (Battier unfortunately would lose minutes to Granger playing 35+ a game, but he'd still be there for key leadership moments like Deke was).

That is in no way a good trade..

Chase "White Butter" Budinger will be better than Deron Williams in a couple years...

Aaron Brooks, Jordan Hill, Shane Battier, Jared Jeffries for Josh Smith, Mike Bibby

This one would require Atlanta to underperform for a couple of months to start the season, making their front office realize the folly of giving a 6yr 126M contract to a borderline superstar and non-top10 player in the NBA. We'd basically be taking on their biggest salary commitments besides Johnson and Marvin Williams and helping them get out from under their immense mistake this offseason in one of the biggest ways possible. On top of that they'd get their "PG of the future" in Aaron Brooks and a more traditional PF than Smith in Jordan Hill, while we take on their moldy Mike Bibby who could then backup Lowry.

I know it sounds like a lot to take on just to get Josh Smith, but how would this sound:

    Lowry/Bibby
    Martin/Taylor
    Ariza/Budinger
    Smith/Scola/Patterson
    Yao/Miller

Scola would tear up that second unit, and I never felt like he was the ideal complement to Yao anyways. Lowry would have four options to pass out to, and the court vision to do it too.

brooks, battier, jeffries, hill, ny swap in 2011 and ny 2012 pick

    for paul and posey

while we lose the professionalism of Battier we get someone who can play decent D in posey and scorer better than Battier but Posey is overpaid of course. Coming off the bench to backup Ariza i dont believe we lose too much.

Paul of course is an upgrade to brooks and can lead an open court offense with ariza, martin and scola or execute a half court set with Yao and the others. we haven't had a guy to properly run the pick and roll since mcgrady and Yao is an excellent setter of screens.

    for NO:

brooks and hill both give the hornets young prospects. Brooks is coming off an excellent season and can be a huge part of their rebuilding process. Hill still has a lot of work to do but can give them a good backup behind either West or Okafor.

on a team with a lot of young players Battier can give them the veteran leadership they need

    Jeffries is an expiring

and the NY swap and NY pick are needed to offset the talent discrepancy

I dont think it will go through personally though -- only way it does is at the trade deadline when the expiring contracts of Battier and Jeffries will be worth more since most of their contract will already been paid for yet they will count in a trade for the full amount. If paul is adamant about starting the season elsewhere then i dont see NO wanting the deals of Jeffries or Battier since they will have to pay them for the season despite being expirings.

To me that seems to be the most fair deal really they have a young stud PG in collison, Brooks is a good addition and even if they do not re-sign him they can sign and trade him for other young prospects or picks. Hill can learn a lot from Okafor and West and develop into a suitable backup for either of them. The picks are probably what makes the deal for NO more than anything else.

I think we may have to include the Black Joe Johnson in that trade as well for sweeteners.
