We know Parsons switch to Fegan, and we are all concerned because the supposed cold relationship between Fegan and Morey. When Parsons' prison contract is up, he will more than likely demand a big paycheck along with the mayorship of Baytown. With Fegan and Morey at the bargaining table, I was concerned that fistfight might break out, and we either have to give Parsons a near-max contract or let him go.

However, the fact that Parsons is part of the group to woo Howard is important. He was probably sitting across the table from Howard and Fegan lat night. At least symbolically, Parsons is part of the core for the Rockets. What the Rockets were showing to Howard was that if you sign with us, you get EVERYONE here - Parsons/Harden, the management, and the legends (Yao, Hakeem, Clyde) for the rest of career. It was also a symbolic gesture to both Parsons and Fegan.

When it comes to contract talks, yes, money talks. But don't under-estimate symbolism and emotions. Ray Allen took less money with the Heat for a reason. Mark Cuban didn't show up for DWill's presentation might have cost him the prized FA. Phil Jackson would rather be in Siberia/Antarctica than joining Kupchak to woo Howard might prove to be important too. I hope Parsons being in the group will prove to be helpful down the road.

By the way, does anyone else find it interesting that Asik and Lin weren't part of the group? Why? Because they aren't part of the core, and are expendable in management's eyes.

Yes, Asik and Lin are not part of the long term core if DH signs with the Rockets.

What I do kind of chuckle at though is Morey being able to say "hey Dwight, since we will have you and Harden locked up in huge money deals, we can still add talent with cheap contracts. Right, Chandler?" :p

I agree with everything you said.

Also the fact that Parsons, Fegan, and Morey were all at the same table could mean that their relationship is improving. Working together on a common goal (Dwight) could better the relationship between two rivals (Morey and Fegan).

Its the harsh truth that Asik and Lin aren't part of the core. As much as they didn't want to believe that they weren't, the two probably had an idea that this might be happening this summer.

The only person that in the core is Harden. Parson is just there because he is cheap compare to Lin and Asik. If Parson has the same contract as Lin/Asik, he will not be there. Money talks.

Asik surprises me the more than Lin on not being in the core. It would be completely mean to unleash Asik on second team offenses of the NBA. Asik would keep Howard fresh. Asik is on a very good contract.

You're right, rotating them throughout the game would be great for the health and performance of both players. We could even finish the game with both Asik and Howard on the floor to grab key rebounds and maintain an inside threat in late game situations.

The defensive gains on having Asik next to Howard would be completely negated on the offensive end. Asik doesn't have the range to command a defender more than 5 feet from the basket and he doesn't have the quickness to crash the offensive glass if he's starting from outside the lane. Having Asik next to howard means D12 would be double-teamed EVERY time down the court. THe point of having multiple superstars is about creating mismatches and forcing the opposition to "pick their poison." By FAR the most attractive 4 to put next to Howard would be the exact opposite of Asik; range out to 15-20 feet, quickness to crash the offensive boards from outside once the shot goes up.

Asik can hit clutch freethrows. That earns him a return engagement, because we will need a center on the floor late in games.

No it wouldn't. There would be no physical way for Lin or Harden to drive to the basket without either HOward or Asik standing at the three point line. A pick n roll where the only options are "drive, dish to Howard, pass to Parsons" is pretty easy to snuff out. There has to be a weak side driver and/or another spot up shooter. Defensively it would be solid, but that isn't enough.

I agree with this. Asik would be a backup if Dwight came here and I don't think that's a luxury we can afford.

We have Parsons bird rights. We will be allowed to pay him whatever is needed to re-sign him.

We will have Parsons' bird rights, right?

I think the message Les is sending is:

Chandler Parsons, you are part of our core and you WILL get paid and you WILL be here for the long term.

That is a message as much to Chandler Parsons as to Fegan.

The opportunity Fegan has here is to make sure that TWO of his clients get paid, not just one.

Les recently saying that he has enough money, but not enough rings is a clear hint in the same direction, too.

    This.

Mr. Alexander already said he would pay the lux tax to field a contender.
So parsons will get his. ;)

    Yes

If Parsons happens to improve so much that he gets that biggest paycheck next time we can always re-sign and then trade him. Having the bird rights to a top player is a good thing.

The odds are that he will continue to improve and get paid nicely but highly doubt he will improve enough to get a max contract.

    Howard In, Asik On Bench
    Asik In, Howard On Bench

48 minutes of rim protection. 48 minutes of having elite rebounder in the game. Asik was worth about 6.4 points per 48 min last season on defense (unadjusted +/-). In 18 min, he would still be worth about 2.4 points on defense. Rockets were relatively the same on offense with and without him.
Considering the good teams are about 8,9 +/- for 48 min, getting a 2.4+/- from bench for 18 minutes would be very nice.

Man if Dwight comes here, pay Parsons 10M for the life of our championship contention. What do we care that Les has to pay the luxury tax? It will be worth it if we're winning titles, or at least competing each year.
