Bill Simmons has Halarabos Voulgaris, professional NBA gambler who uses analytics to make NBA bets, on his BS Report to talk NBA awards, playoffs and current events.

At one point, they were discussing coaches that they find questionable. Simmons suggested McHale, and Voulgaris says he doesn't have a problem with McHale. The fairly brief McHale discussion starts at the 42:42 mark of the podcast.

Context is who are the worst coaches of the playoff teams.

BS thinks HV would name McHale but he doesn't and thinks he's fine

Brooks to me is one of the worst. Durant makes him look, though.

Only if you're into IMPROPER context. There are 8 playoff teams. He listed his 3 least favorite. Which by definition makes McHale at worst #5 among WC playoff coaches. If anything, Voulgaris obviously believes McHale is #4 or #5, because he and Simmons talked highly about Pop, Carlisle, and Rivers. So this makes McHale the very definition of average among WC playoff coaches from one opinion.

Brooks makes McHale look damned good, IMO. McHale, to me, is still learning the ropes. I've seen him pull strings and get better with time. He's decent at adjustments, OK with matchups. Only issue for me with him is the offense when the opposing D ends the first read (I know it's 'read n react'). Believe me, McHale is way better than he was.

I'm stunned that, for example, Erik Spoelstra got immensely better, and Scott Brooks didn't.

Worst coach in the postseason? It has to be Brooks, no? It ain't McHale, that's for sure.

In fairness, being behind those guys isn't terrible. They each have at least a ring.

    Why is your context fine?

If a person is ranked 4 or 5 out of 8, why is it more proper to put it in your context than what the OP had, which was that Voulgaris was listing coaches he find questionable? I listened to that part of the podcast and clearly that was what Voulgaris was referring to, coaches he does not like, as opposed to just listing his "worst coaches" list.

    a) frankly I missed CH's note below the link and knowing that he trolls for posts with quirky thread titles I decided to add in context
    b) there was nothing wrong with my context which is what you called out
    c) why do you give a damn? Have you become the GARM police, and if so, am I currently under arrest for suspicion of improper contextualization?

The gist of his assessment was (paraphrasing) "I'd rather have a coach who maybe does too little, than a coach who gets in the way by making head scratching decisions that actively hurt the team"

i.e. Perkins/Fisher/Caron Butler's minutes or GSW running post plays for O'neal and using Bogut like Patrick Ewing

IMO McHale is Vinny Del Negro. He's not really holding the team back per se, but there's another level that the team could reach if we had Doc Rivers.

Misread the long thread title as

Official! Halarabos Voulgaris Doesn't Have a Problem with McHale Thread

and then went back to the GARM front page to check what thread it's talking about...only to see Official Fire McHale Thread.
