These idiots were about 900 miles off the coast of Mexico when their 36' POS sailboat had a complete power failure -- it's a miracle they didn't get any farther and the waves were minimal. I've been on Galveston bay on a 32' boat when a storm came in and I can't imagine for a second having a 1 yo and 3 yo child on the boat in choppy 10+ seas -- if they had hit weather (which they would have) they could have easily seen 25+ foot ocean waves. Hell, look at the waves the various search parties looking for the missing 777 are dealing with (35+) -- people can be so utterly moronic.

Rescued Family "Proud of Choice" to Sail With Baby

A San Diego family that was rescued by the U.S. Navy after their sailboat became stranded hundreds of miles off the Mexico coast with a sick 1-year-old baby on board is defending the decision to travel the seas with young children.

Two weeks ago, Eric and Charlotte Kaufman and their daughters, 1-year-old Lyra and 3-year-old Cora, set sail on a new leg of their around-the-world journey.

But Thursday, they sent out a satellite distress call, saying Lyra had become violently sick. On top of that, their boat had lost its steering and communication abilities.

In a large coordinated effort, the California Air National Guard’s 129th Rescue Wing worked with the Navy to send four pararescuemen, who jumped from a plane into the ocean and climbed aboard the Rebel Heart boat to treat Lyra.

By Saturday, they said the baby’s condition had stabilized while they waited for further transportation from the USS Vandegrift, their rescuing ship.

All were in stable condition, the Coast Guard announced Sunday.

"We are proud of our choices and our preparation, and while we are disappointed that we lost our sailboat and our home, we remain grateful for those who came to our aid and those family and friends who continue to encourage and support us," Eric and Charlotte wrote in a statement issued from the Vandegrift.

The family reportedly was given one trip to get their things off the boat – as much as they can carry -- before sailors sunk the Rebel Heart in the ocean, according to a Facebook update English posted Sunday evening.

She said the Kaufmans will be taken via helicopter to San Diego, where they are expected to arrive Tuesday morning.

Navy Commander Charlie Brown said they are more than 1,000 miles from the city -- the same distance as San Diego to Houston.

The couple's decision to live with two young daughters on a 36-foot boat has raised questions about their maritime lifestyle.

Among their strongest critics is Charlotte's brother, James Moriset.

"It is crazy. It is nuts. My thoughts about it were -- bringing kids on a trip like that and then having the second one along the way and bringing a younger kid along on the trip, it was just -- I do feel very firmly that yes, that was crazy," said Moriset.

yeah these people are complete pieces of crap and they better get a huge ass bill for this.

People love to brag on things like this and for what? first of all no one gives a rats ass that you sailed to here or there. You risked your f-ing kids life so you can blog about it? WTF

This kind of behavior makes me sick.

Honestly they should have cps take away their kids

Imagine the infant's bragging rights if he completed the around the world voyage on that POS sailboat. People only laugh when others fail, but are given the key to cities when they succeed. I'm sure some folks were laughing at Tom Anderson of Myspace when he initially launched his site. The family should try again next year on a marginally better sailboat. Hopefully they are sponsored by Red Bull or REI.

Stupid. Those parents put their two children in danger. There is no logical point to sailing around the world with two toddlers, not even if they were professional seamen (tee hee).

I hope all those donations go to the children and the rescuers.

I still can't believe those two knucklehead parents actually thought they had a chance of successfully circumnavigating the globe in an old 36 foot sailboat. They lived in the thing before taking off on their journey -- I wonder if the dad thought he was Sonny Crockett?

Little Magellan would have been quite the hero had he not become incredibly seasick during the first day of the voyage -- then there is that whole lack of power thing. But all is well that ends well so they say.

You have to wait for Fox News to tell you that it's your tax money being spent on the rescue before you get mad, right ?
    ..

Don't give me the BS about lives being more important, it's that family that put their lives at risk. It's their choice, right ?

Next up on Family vs. Wild, we'll dump an unsuspecting family of 5 into the Sub-Saharan desert with one bottle of water, a 2x4 with a rusty nail sticking out of it, and a copy of The Killers Greatest Hits. Let's see how they cope!

A one-year-old was violently ill on a stranded boat with no power, causing a rescue mission to be conducted costing taxpayer dollars, and you don't see a problem with it. Color me not shocked.

They definitely used tax money on the rescue.
