ratified this date in 1865, ending slavery in the US (the emancipation proclamation only abolished slavery in the confederacy, or rather, territory under confederate control, as of Jan. 1, 1863. my nine y/o says she's "really into civil rights," so thought the day worth noting.
my kids (of similar ages) are fascinated by the civil rights movement too. They find it mind blowing and inspiring.
my daughter has been walking around the house singing the Stevie Wonder song about MLK- she's asked for more stevie wonder on her iPod, which i'm happy to oblige.
I remember hearing or reading somewhere that the 13th amendment would have been the 14th amendment if the Civil War hadn't broke out and prevented the other 13th amendment (which provided punishment for violating the clause in the Constitution regarding foreign titles) from being ratified by the States.
Great day in American History not just Black History.... Funny I hear people say , "what if slavery comes back"... I say to them ... Good luck tryin... You have to try and enforce it in the hood eventually... lol
And a nice little other nugget to celebrate today! On this day in 1933, Prohibition came to an end with the ratification of the 21st Amendment. Should be a national holiday!
You should instead tell them that slavery is thriving despite it's illegality because of the prohibition against prostitution, and that you hope none of them ever got a "happy ending."
sorry that aint slavery... As long as blacks have rights to do what everyone else does, it's not slavery... Seriously hate that people throw "slavery" around to express a form of disadvantage... If you have a choice of employment , you're not "slaving"... If you are able to talk in public, you're not "slaving"... Slavery is a dark period of mankind... There's nothing in the US right now that dictates "slavery"...
But he will still make 'Obamics' jokes ... strange twisted sense of ethics and logic. It was a socialized Federal effort that freed the slaves from a restricted Constitutional interpretation, State's Right's platform, you know that right?
Um... I think you need to do some research on sex slavery which does in fact happen in the United States. It is most definitely slavery.
