I would be okay with Becky Hammon being the grizzlies head coach

Be the permanent head coach of an NBA team? Yeah, free agents will be lining up to join that circus. Not. In other words, pipe dream. A team might make her the interim head coach, so the media will praise the owner, but it ends there. She'd be replaced at the end of the season.

 

I think that if she got to learn a couple years from Pop, she too could join the likes of many Pop disciples roaming the NBA coaching world.

 

I think she would be the kind of coach DMC would respond to.

Becky Hammond ain't getting no coaching job either what..... But your grizz are more then welcome to fire another good coach that has you guys winning 50 games yearly. You gotta just realize that the grizz just arnt talented enough. Grizz need a big time scorer up top in the worst way if you guys could find one then I would say it's the coaches fault if you didn't advance further.

I love Marc gasol he's great but he's not a top 10 NBA player and you kind of need those guys to compete at a championship level. Firing your coach would be a big mistake he seems to be the only guy in the org that understands you can't score under 100 and expect to beat the elite.

Vinny Del Negro.

- He actually played for the Spurs.
- He is also a PG in his whole NBA career.
- He somehow coached Chris Paul which only a few did.
- He is more than a coach, he once even be the assistant GM of the Suns.

He is currently jobless.

 

At this point it would be more harmful then helpful to the cause to give Becky a head coaching job. She's got to spend her time working through the ranks of assistant coaching before getting her shot. Few players would give her the respect because she hasn't spent enough time on the sideline earning it. Some day she might be a legit coaching candidate but giving her the job before she has earned it or is ready, would be more harmful for women coaches than helpful because unfortunately, Hammon's success is tied to when another female coach would be considered. If she fails spectacularly, then it makes it that much harder on other female coaches trying to break into the league.


...I bet Pops tries to groom her and eventually retires and tries to leave her with the head coaching position - effectively building a culture around the team that is inclusive of Hammon/women so that she doesn't have as much of an obstacle to overcome as being thrown into an organization that isn't used to women on the bench/as the face of the organization.
