This isn’t a rumor based on sources so much as it is one based on common sense. As well as Joel Anthony played as a starting center against both Boston and Chicago, the Heat desperately need a true center who can protect the rim, finish plays, and provide both size and athleticism on both ends of the court.

The problem is that they don’t have much money to spend, and will probably have even less after the new CBA is completed. So they need an effective 15-20 MPG “show starter” at center (it seems likely that the team’s crunch-time lineup will still be a “small” one next season, with either Anthony or Haslem manning the 5 spot), who can do center-like things and would come at a low price. (Heat fans may have pipe dreams about either Tyson Chandler or Nene, but Riley enticing either of those players to join his team at a severe discount would make his free-agency haul last season look like child’s play.)

The natural option seems to be Samuel Dalembert, who just completed the final season of a contract with the Kings that paid him $13.5 million. Dalembert would probably have to take a pay cut to join the Heat as well, but he wouldn’t make anything near what Chandler and Nene will make this off-season on the open market, and the allure of playing with James, Wade, and Bosh, as well as Miami’s large Haitian community, could be enough to entice Dalembert to sacrifice some cash and join the Heat.

Of course, Dalembert will get other offers, particularly from the Knicks, who also need a center, have some star power, and play in a huge market. If Dalembert decides to take the money, there’s not a whole lot the Heat can do to upgrade their roster without making a major move. The Heat will have a hard time improving their roster significantly this summer, which makes the fact they choked away two sizeable fourth-quarter leads in the NBA Finals that much harder of a pill to swallow for them.

No way....get that guy some training.....the Heat pick like 29th...no reason to do that when you can simply buy a pick.

Find out what Thabeet will be with some playing time and development.

Yeah I think the shine wore off a little for the Miami Heat. I can't see a lot of the free agents taking paycuts to chase a ring with the Big 3 next year.

they might add more years to cover the difference, plus a chance at a championship.

Add more years? Dalembert will get the max number of years wherever he signs and for a lot more money than the Heat can offer.

There are other players that will go to Miami, but guys with significant earnings potential probably won't.

Dalembert needs the money to help Haitians. Riley needs to target someone who doesn't give a **** about Haitians or, better yet, humans in general.

He has already said he would like to join the Heat, and he wouldn't be the first player who will take a pay cut to join them "Miller, the big 3, Haslem"

All this is contingent on the new CBA. With Wade, James and Bosh, the Heat may not have the cap room to add anybody.

    http://www.iamagm.com/news/2011/02/28/samuel.dalembert.can.see.himself.signing.miami.summer

Sacramento center Samuel Dalembert — a possibility for the Heat’s midlevel exception this summer (if there is one in the new labor deal) — told us last week, “It would be nice to play here [in Miami]. I see myself fitting in well with this team. They need someone to block shots, rebound. I can get lobs as an athletic big man. Some of their centers are at the tail end.” Dalembert, 29, then had 18 points and 13 rebounds — above his career averages (8.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.9 blocks).

Would help that team alot. Put Anthony back on the bench as your backup. I think we will see a trend of older guys maybe taking a pay cut to have a chance to play for rings.

Miami is in the middle tier on NBA salary cap, so that means, more then half of the NBA wouldn't be able to sign anyone, don't see that happening.
Also, Dallas has about 20-30 mill more of salary then the Heat do.

    Hasheem is trash.
Just a tall dude that was never taught any footwork throughout his high school and college career.

I didn't realize he said this. We'll see if it's anything more than lip service.

I'm sure the interest is real. Winning is there, but more importantly Miami is home to what may be the nation's largest Haitian population and is a quick flight from Haiti (West Coast is an all day ordeal).

Also, rule 101 in free agency is to make every potential bidder feel like you want to go there.

Dallas has ~$61M committed next season....Miami has $65M committed.

If the Bird Exception survives and the MLE/LLE is eliminated (more likely than an immediate hard cap or no changes), Dallas will be fine and Miami need to trade Bosh to fill out the team.
If the CBA emerges with a hard cap to be implemented within 2-3 years, that's going to have a chilling effect on both teams.
If there is an immediate hard cap, there will have to be an amnesty rule with it. Dallas would lose Marion and Haywood (and Chandler and Butler), but Miami would have to axe Bosh.

I agree. What do we have to lose? Chances are a late first will bust and have less potential just because he's not as tall.
