I remember in junior high school, my science teacher would tell this joke at least once a week and always directed it at me.

Why are there so many telephone poles in CHina?
Cuz there's so many Wings, and so many Wongs that someone might wing the wong number.

I laughed along at the time, but I felt a bit embarassed by it since I was the only CHinese kid and everyone else was black except the teacher who was white.

given what you described, I say it was racist....i think there is a person or way it could be said and not be racist, though...

It's a good joke to tell a chick, she'll giggle provided she's not an uptight asian.

The only problem I have with ethnic jokes is because alot of times used to look down on others ethnicity. What minority likes to be looked down upon?

    It's showing prejudice, not racism.

I think that he probably meant nothing by it but that people who teach or lead others need to be especially careful in their use of words.

The fact that the joke made you uncomfortable is a sure sign he shouldn't have told it.

It does not take a genuis to see that you don't tell a joke about the ethnicity of the one student who may feel different already.

I can't tell you how many times I heard the quarter/spoon/forks and stairs joke in school. You know, I thin they should do racial awareness clases much earlier like in junior high school instead of waiting till college to do it :D

just because someone gets uncomfortable doesnt mean it should be told...maybe it means the person shouldnt be so sensitive?

the teacher obviously thought that it didnt bother hotballa...afterall, hotballa was playing along and actually giving the teacher the "green light" by continually laughing at it

i know, but you still laughed which sends a signal that you are ok with it. If you sat there stone faced and visable upset, and the teacher still told the joke...then that would be another story

Hard to teach that to a young kid though. I would have said something if it was another student though ;) Didn't really know how to react coming form the teacher so I just played along.

so its ok for a teacher to tell those type of jokes to students as long as the kids laugh?

So a teacher shouldn't be held to a higher standard of ethics given the type of young impressionable minds he/she is in charge of?

Not to get preachy but we need to get back to the basics here.

Given the fact you are a fierce defender of everything African American, I suggest you not make cheap joke on my race.
