He was pretty hard to miss...wearing trademark big 'fro and Auburn gear. I was doing some business out there and ran into him in the parking lot. Just thought it was interesting since I don't think he'll be around for the 9th pick...or will he?

Isn't he shorter than his college numbers listed him at?

    Was he there for a Rocket's tryout/workout/look-see?

He wont be a lottery pick selection and alot of ppl dont think he will be in the first round. I think he will go late first round but if he is there on the board when the rockets pick at #38, we should take him.

We should take him with any late 1st round pick we may have, if he's still there.

Chris Porter's draft status has really been plummeting. He measured in at 6-5 which is 2 inches shorter than the 6-7 he was listed at. He possesses the game of a PF but has the size of a SG. There were questions whether or not he could make the transition from the PF to SF b/c of his lack of perimeter shot so a move from PF to SG will be even tougher. He could be a very late first rounder but second rounder is looking more likely. At 38th overall, the Rockets could take a chance on him.

He's at least 6' 7" if you include the height of his afro.

I think chris is athletic enough to play the 2, thus i think he can learn to play it. He could contribute defensively at first (the guy is athletic), and then work on his Jumper and ball handling.
I think if you have athleticism, you can learn to driblle and shoot.

Chris Porter will not play the two. He's not that quick laterally. Sure he's got the agility and speed that makes him look explosive at the 4. But he won't be able to hang with 2 guards. IT's a HUGE question mark if he even has the ability to guard SF, much less the 2. And being athletic doesn't mean you will be a good defender. He's a below average defender as it is right now.

"I think if you have athleticism, you can learn to driblle and shoot."

Um...why don't you just get a guy that can already dribble and also have athleticism. Or an athletic shooter. But one out of 3 is just horrible. Athleticism can really be overrated! 6'5" athletes are a dime, a dozen. What makes you think that Porter is going to learn how to DRIBBLE AND SHOOT. That's way too many if's. I'd rather just draft a pure shooter than a pure athlete.

I saw on this ESPN show where they measured Elton Brand, and he was either 6'4 1/2" or 6'5 1/2", not the 6'8" or whatever he's listed at.

So, if Porter's really 6'5" what's the big deal? I think he'll make the transition to SF, but then again I'm not the one working with him to make that a possibility. He could have someone helping him to become a PF, who knows.

I guess that I'm ignorant, but I thought Porter played SMALL forward at Auburn, not power forward.

    Am I wrong or what?

Um..no, Elton Brand is not that short. He's every inch of his 6'8" listed frame without his shoes.

Brand measured out at a legitimate 6'8". That was big news, and a probable reason he ascended to the number one pick, during last year's predraft campaign.

Porter at 6'5" is a huge question mark because he has no outside game to speak of. As a second rounder he makes sense, mostly because he is athletic and a hard worker and the fact that you really can't screw up a second rounder (the vast majority never actually play or contribute anyway).

As Hobbs said, it was big predraft news last year when Brand measured out at a legit 6'8".

Here's an excerpt from Excite Sports:
"Weaknesses: There have been some doubts about Brand's height. Some have felt that he is probably closer to 6-6 than his listed 6-8. However, Brand measured at 6-8 at an official physical exam with the NBA."

I think the controversy with brand was that Duke listed him at 6'9", no big deal, but i think some teams measured him at 6'7". But, as jerry krause said, he has a short neck, so he isnt as short as it seems.

da man, maybe i am giving porter the benefit, and while athleticism is overrated, dont you think that it is rare to find a guy as athletic as porter ? Atheltes are a dime a dozen, but could porter be off-the-scale athletically ?

Roderick Rhodes? Nah. Not much more of a shot, but significantly more athleticism. Porter DOMINATED last year, and was very good this year. He wouldn't be worth a lottery pick, but I don't think he'd be a mistake with a mid-late first rounder.

6'5 really wouldn't be that bad for a SF-not optimal, but not a killer. I agree that he couldn't play SG.

Finally, I think he'd be a good compliment to Williams. If we need shooting, let Williams play. If we need defense and rebounding, put Porter in there. Neither one is a completely well-rounded player, but with luck, maybe Porter may become one... and in the mean-time, we'd have a nice rotation at the 3. If a team gives us an a late first rounder, I think we should nab him.

This is a guy that would have gone in the lottery last year. Sure, there are holes in his game... but you can say that about most players out of the first 10 picks.

I think that alot of the rap on Chris Porter is that he was valued so MUCH last year, that a slightly disappointing season this year disproportionately diminished his draft stock.

Porter at the 2 just brings flashbacks of Rodrick Rhodes. All athelticism, no shot.
