i noticed that if you group the nba into the three tiers below, then the rockets have very similar records against each tier somehow.

tier 1: .600-1.000 teams: cavs, warriors, spurs, thunder, raptors, bulls, clippers.
    record: 4-5.

tier 2: .400-.599 teams: hawks, pacers, heat, pistons, celtics, magic, grizzlies, mavs, knicks, wizards, hornets, bucks, jazz, blazers, kings.
    record: 12-10.

tier 3: .000-.399 teams: nuggets, pelicans, suns, twolves, nets, 76ers, lakers.
    record: 6-6.

It shows that talent is there, but lack of system and effort makes results inconsistent.

That 6-6 record for the bottom tier teams is inexcusable.

The Rockets can play with almost anyone when they want to. Unfortunately, certain members of the team just don't care.

I think the Rockets are probably the 5th to 7th best team in the league when they decide to make an effort. The fans really aren't getting their money's worth with this team. Sad.

My take away is that this is a .500 team.

This the real problem. Inconsistent play against lower tier teams.

    If only we were:

    Tier 1: 5-4
    Tier 2: 15-7
    Tier 3: 9-3

    Overall: 29-14

That would puts us in play for 3rd or 4th seed in the West which was the most realistic possibility given the historic starts by the Warriors and the Spurs.

Those loses to the Nuggets, Nets, and other inferior teams are the reason we are #7 in the West.

We play up and down to our competition....never playing to our capability. Also, shows 2 things.
    1. we dont respect our competition
    2. we dont come prepared.

one is a players issue and the other is a coaching staff issue.

so it doesnt matter who we play, we always have a 50/50 chance of winning. not bad, better than most. that means we have a 50/50 winning a 'ship. guess i was wrong

All this tells you is its not about who they are playing it's all about how the Rockets are playing. They can get beat by anybody but on the other hand they can beat anybody.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmm,

So we have 12 games left against tier 1 teams, 18 games left against tier 2 teams, and 9 games left against tier 3 teams.

So at these current tier win rates, we should wind up with a record of 41-41 or 40-42.

But realistically as we go down the stretch the lowered tier teams become weaker as they chase ping-pong balls and perhaps the top tier teams will give away a game or two after they clinch towards the end of the season. But that middle tier is typically fighting for every game for their playoff chances.

So realistically this group could possibly win as much as 45 games if everything fell in place but if things go wrong we could drop as low as 38 wins.

    See signature..........

But think about it even if we went 10-2 against those teams we would have been top 4

rep for someone to do the same list for last year at this time. But move the Thunder (Durant injury) to Tier 2 and Atlanta to Tier 1

The Rockets are playing better so I think they'll win 46 games this year.

    ??

I asked if someone could compare to last year. But put ATL at tier 1 and Durant-less OKC at Tier 2.

you said the hawks are better than okc, despite not even being 10 games above 500, okc is around 20.
