This just screams tacky. I honestly don't understand how in a world where we over just inundated with advertisements that this kind of approach even works. I was reading on the topic and there isn't any real data to show it does or doesn't. It has become so much that I have learned to tune things out. Unless I am actively seeking an item, I don't think ads really effect me that much. Maybe they do and I just don't know it.
The reason that advertisements are commonplace outside the United States, especially in countries like Australia is that most teams can't afford to function without them. I work for an apparel company and the amount of influence a sponsor has on a team is always detrimental to the overall branding and visual appeal of a uniform, but we roll with it because these teams have no choice. The NBA has proven they can manage without them. Silver would garner a lot more respect if he just acknowledged that this is a blatant money grab. The NBA doesn't need 'more exposure' that these ads will supposedly provide. It's nonsense. Owners will make more money and none of it will be passed onto fans via merchandising, tickets or NBA League Pass. Lies. All Lies.
Can't wait to pay anywhere from $69-$299 for an authentic Rockets jersey with a Toyota logo patch. That **** is FIRE!
IF this means getting a Nike swoosh and Jordan jumpman logo on jerseys, i'm okay with that, but my assumption is that it's going to be a team sponsor, correct? Such as Toyota for the Rockets. State Farm for the Clippers. BBVA compass for the Nets etc. So i expect to see these companies logos on uniforms Or am i wrong? Nike will have control of uniforms, logos and brandings and merch, so will we see Nike, Jordan and other Nike owned companies like Converse appear on the patches?
If this is the case, then they need to tone the **** down with commercial breaks. Only works in soccer because they do not have time outs.
Huge mistake that will backfire and ultimately be undone. It will cost the league more than it will make. It will hurt the NBA's brand and lower the value of the game. It takes the game to bush-league and greed-conscious. It will affect the game in negative ways. People will lose respect for the game. No legit pro American sport uses these things. It's one thing if everyone was scrapping buy....Adam done on and goofed here.
The NBA patch moving to the back of the jersey, was it ever explained? If not, then this is pretty much why.
I would be fine with this if it reduced the price of watching games for everyone, but obviously that has no chance of happening. This will be new revenue stream for owners and tickets will continue to increase in price at the same rate they always were. The only difference this makes is, this is another way for big market teams to make big market money. Sponsors will pay more to teams with a larger fan base. Those teams will then have more money to spend within the organization, on coaches and to pay luxury tax. And knowing US sports, this will start with one sponsor and get out of hand with multiple sponsors. It's already really absurd the number of stoppages in a game which are purely for marketing purposes at this point. Teams can easily adjust to playing the quarters without timeouts using different substitution patterns, having players call plays and (imagine) letting players decide how to react to in-game situations. I've been watching basketball so long but I still prefer the recorded game over the live game because I can't stand stopping every 10-15 minutes to see DeAndre Jordan wearing a dress to sell you insurance.
NBA just adding new revenue streams....Design integrity be damned. They don't need it. And it dumbs down the product. Disappointing. BTW, I am sure everyone will be excited to BUY a jersey in the team shop that ALSO has that advertisement on it. Not.
Yep. The reputation of the NBA among the 4 big sports leagues is already pretty low. This can't help.
I guess Shiner & Karbach are out of the running for the Rockets. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">NBA tells teams it can't sell jersey ad to companies involved with: Alcohol, tobacco, gambling, politics, media company or Nike competitor.</p>— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) <a href="https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/status/727957511538540544">May 4, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
So, ads taking over the NBA jersey is akin to white settlers vanquishing the Native American and conquering the West?
It's inevitable but it probably won't be that big of a deal. They already put ads on the all star jerseys and nobody really noticed. Also, we will have to see if advertisers actually find this works or not. Full analysis: http://www.ballandone.com/2016/05/06/your-team-sponsored-by/
