I seriously have no idea what they do...as I am aware the family is a figurehead...so why do people care anymore?

Do they have any power outside of dominating the press for no apparent reason?

These people are the old school Kardashians.

that's a load of crap, they might be a vehicle of wealth transfer, but they produce nothing, add nothing to the pie

I'm amazed there isn't a stronger movement to abolish the monarchy. The notion that one is entitled by law to the wealth and services of others by virtue of birth is archaic and just plain immoral.

How does the royal family assuage their guilt? By acting as benevolent dictators of course, having causes and donating to charities and appearing at events and just generally being nice and polite.

Makes me proud to be an American, we got rid of that crap long ago.

The notion that they contribute nothing is a bunch of crap. The mere existence of the royals generates a ton of money just from tourism.

The notion of benevolent dictatorship is also false. They have virtually zero political power.

Now, you may argue that even without the Royal Family, these tourist attractions would still attract all these tourists anyway, don't forget things like memorabilia that uses the Royal Family's image is still a huge revenue generator. Think of how often the Queen's face appears in England.

And to be honest, what incentive is there to abolish the monarchy? The cost is almost negligible per capita (62 p per person, which is a small amount unless you're homeless), but the tradition, the sense of historical purpose more than compensates for it.

You have clearly never heard of the stupid things Prince Charles or Prince Harry have done.

The British respect the Royal Family and consider it a part of their heritage. It is strongly frowned upon for the Royal Family to engage in politics and commerce. Its pretty much the only thing left of their once great empire. Japan still uses the monarch to this day.

While most Americans do not understand the love for the British Monarch, they don't understand our love for our Bill of Rights. (protection of ALL speech and the love for our guns)

Since a very young age I've always wondered why America cared about them. They'd do segments on the on shows like Entertainment Tonight, publish pictures in celebrity magazines, etc... who the hell cares?

Cultural identity*, history, tradition, no constitutional alternative. And the most important monarchy in Western and especially American history. Our military and municipal government is basically British and was around before Jefferson or Madison.

*American culture, by contrast, is what: money, power, race, politics, entertainment? Not to be cynical but would read a Shakespeare play about that?

from Unforgiven, i love this quote

English Bob: [discussing the assassination of President Garfield] If you were to try to assassination a king, sir, the... how shall I say it? The aura of royalty would cause you to miss. But, the president...
    [chuckles]
English Bob: I mean, why not shoot the president?

Umm, we lost the war of 1812. If you spin it well, you could say no one won. Nothing says like kicking someones ass after they burn your capital to the ground.

    Basically nothing.
They just something for Americans and people to slob over for no reason.
I find the idea of 'royalty' rather ridiculous and borderline offensive.
They are considered 'special' because they are just born to a certain family.

I wonder if I got together a group of people and challenged them for the throne, if the old world mentality will hold up and I can become the king of England?
