I posted a thread earlier about taking a trip to Thailand. we will be there for almost 4 weeks. that trip is in two weeks. now, i'm thinking we probably need travel insurance. two of us have never been out of the country and one of us is diabetic. who knows what might get us sick. i want to purchase travel medical coverage. do you have any recommendations on which companies to buy from? i've been reading this Travel Insurance Review but wanted some feedback from those who've actually have bought some.
I wouldn't worry about it. A trip to the hospital in thailand cost about 20 bucks and includes the meds. My wife got a bladder infection and food poisoning and the bill was only 30 bucks including lab work and meds. A hospital stay runs about 100 bucks a day. Most health insurance plans will reimburse you for any medical bills over there. You just have to foot the bill first and file paper work which is exactly what you would have to do for travel insurance.
Have you purchased the airline tickets already? If you use your American Express card to purchase the airline tickets, and pay the extra $19.95 for trip insurance, it includes door to door to door coverage for health/medical, travel delay, lost luggage, stolen luggage, delayed luggage, and any items that may be stolen. I bought this for my trip to Egypt last summer, mainly for the travel delay and baggage insurance. On the entire trip, I was on about 6 or 7 different flights (including connections), so I figured my checked bag was bound to get lost somewhere. On one of the last legs of the trip (Rome to London), my bag was delayed and American Express gave me $500. Well worth it for long trips, IMO.
Even if you have already purchased the tickets, you should be able to get trip insurance from your credit card prior to travel.
yes, tickets have been purchased but with chase visa amazon card. i can't find anything about travel coverage. we will only have once connecting flight so i'm little less worried about luggage. i just want some peace of mind about medical expenses should there be an accident or sickness. it's hard to guage who is a legitimate insurer with all the negative comments about everyone i've looked up.
Do you have an American Express card? If so, you can still add the insurance for $19.95 per passenger anytime before your outbound departure.
