Daryl Morey deserves to be Executive of the Year (complete with video)

Last year I thought Daryl Morey was snubbed for NBA Executive of the Year. In one summer he took a team with Kyle Lowry as it’s most valuable asset and completely rebuilt the team. He took advantage of other teams with his knowledge of the CBA when he acquired Asik and Lin. He absolutely maxed out Lowry’s value when he traded him to the Raptors for a guaranteed lottery pick. Along with Asik and Lin he assembled a team full of 1st and 2nd year players and a couple of veterans. Almost everyone on Clutchfans as well as those in the national media picked Houston to challenge the rest of the NBA for the worst record in the league.

He’s Playing Chess While The Rest Of Us Are Playing Checkers

The problem with all of the preseason predictions is that Daryl was not through making moves. He had traded almost every single player with any value for a draft pick with the exception of Chandler Parsons and Kevin Martin. When he couldn’t make a draft day deal for Dwight Howard he made three 1st round draft picks that turned into Jeremy Lamb, Terrence Jones and Royce White (no ones perfect). On October 28, 2012 all of the little moves that Daryl Morey was making finally paid off in the form of James Harden.

Daryl Morey completely disassembled and reassembled the Rockets in one summer. In a matter of a few months he took a team of aging but good roll players that had finished as the best lottery team 3 years running with no superstar and transformed them into a play off team with one of the youngest superstars in the league. But the NBA ignored what an amazing job Daryl Morey did last season.

Fast forward to the summer of 2013 and Daryl lands the biggest free agent since Miami landed Lebron James. Dwight Howard became a Houston Rocket and now the team is not just a play off team. The Houston Rockets are a legit championship contender that boasts the best record since the calendar changed from 2013 to 2014. It’s time for Daryl to get recognized for the work he has done the last 2 seasons. No GM has been better than Daryl Morey during the last two seasons.
