I agree totally about Covington. For a guy his size he should be alot more fluid on the court. He looks like a Robot without any programming out there. But like you say, i guess expectations are too high based on what he was doing in the DL.
The problem with DMO is his strength is the one thing we don't ask him to do, his strength is back to the basket scoring. But that is the last thing we ask him to do unfortunately.
What I learned: DMo is a center, not a PF, and is the inverse Asik- great offense, questionable defense. what I didn't learn: can the best center in Europe guard LaMarcus Aldridge? this would be good to find out, since no one on the roster last year could.
a guy who can crack the rotation isn't bad for a 42nd pick. That said, I'll believe it when I see it. TOo on and off in SUmmer League....
he was a beast early on in SL man the issue was at the end our entire team was exhausted. Most of those guys had played 13 games in 18 nights or some ridiculous number of games like that. There was no way they would maintain their level of play for long at that rate. If they games were more spread out, I think we could have blown away any team in the SL to be honest.
Thought D-Mo showed progress. Last year summer league seemed like all he could make were lay ups. This year the hook shot us is falling. He looked a lot more smooth with the hook shot, no jerkiness to it. Again it's summer league, let's see what happens during camp and regular season. Nick Johnson will surprise opponents on the floor at first, then coaches will talk to their players. Will have to see if Johnson can make his own adjustments. Is Leunen really known for making three pointers? A good play by Covington gets followed by a string of not so good.
I'll second the OP's emotions. Also: Andre Dawkins shoots pretty well. I'd like to see some more of him, at least with the RGV.
Pretty good set of interviews from Canaan, DMo, Johnson, Cov and Andre Dawkins at LVSL. http://www.basketballinsiders.com/houston-rockets-summer-league-interviews/
Interesting that Morey included Covington in his discussion of potential role players for the team. I didn't get to watch many of the summer league games, but it seems like the consensus was the he played like hot garbage. Anyone have a different perspective on his game?
Considering Canaan, Johnson and DMo dominated the ball, it hurt Cov's game and he was put in a tough situation. He really looked uncomfortable playing off the ball. The problem with this is that he will be asked to play a similar role for us (3&D). If he can't succeed in summer league, it is tough to be optimistic about his chances in the NBA (at least with us). On the bright side, his stroke looked fantastic.
