Whether you're life or choice, I think you'd have to agree that this is at best a very misguided reason for getting an abortion.

I thought this was going to be about some established scientist making a statement, not one dumb woman rationalizing her stupid personal decisions.

While it was a bad reason to have an abortion. Having less kids and reducing human population will definately help the environment.

And she could kill herself too to further reduce the human impact on the environment. Obviously human over population creates environmental harm but how far do you want to take that? If we determine that reducing humans is the best way to protect the environment we could justify murder on that basis.

I'm not saying abortion is murder and am for keeping abortion legal, to a point, but I think "misguided" or better yet "zealot" is the right term for this person.

I haven't read the article, but from the quote posted, it could mean she got herself sterilized for that reason, but it wasn't clear about the abortion. And if so, good for her. Part of the reason I don't think I want kids is because the world is overpopulated already and I think having kids can be a very selfish thing.

I'll go read the article now so I won't sound any dumber. :)

ETA: Just read the article. The word abortion was used twice, once in the banner headline and in the first sentence. I think the point was they were sterilized to reduce their carbon footprint not that she had an abortion for the same reason.

They did no harm to a living thing by sterilizing themselves. If you have an issue with that, then you should have an issue with birth control in general.

I don't know Blake, Is having kids a selfish thing to do? You pretty much sacrifice all your time and effort into bringing along a future generation.

It seems more like a responsibility to me. If you don't want kids that is one thing, but to say those who have kids do it for selfish reasons seems off base.

From the Daily Mail article it sounds like she did have the abortion because she believed she was saving the planet.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/femail/article.html?in_article_id=495495&in_page_id=1879

"Because when Toni terminated her pregnancy, she did so in the firm belief she was helping to save the planet.

Incredibly, so determined was she that the terrible "mistake" of pregnancy should never happen again, that she begged the doctor who performed the abortion to sterilise her at the same time.

He refused, but Toni - who works for an environmental charity - "relentlessly hunted down a doctor who would perform the irreversible surgery.

Finally, eight years ago, Toni got her way."

That's what I get for only reading the Fox News version.

In the grand scheme of things, it does seem a misguided and selfish reason to have an abortion, but then again, if you're anti-abortion, is there any reason that won't sound selfish and misguided?

And moes, I didn't say all who have children are selfish. I said it could be a selfish thing.
