MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Three people were injured Saturday night before a game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies when a small section of the stands at FedExForum collapsed.

One person was taken away on a stretcher and two others were treated at the scene. Grizzlies spokesman Dustin Krugel said during the game all three were taken to various Memphis hospitals as a precaution. Officials did not have the identities of any of the injured or specific hospitals, but all three were alert and conscious after the accident.

The incident happened about an hour before the 8 p.m. EDT tip-off as some of the Grizzlies were leaving the floor after the pregame shootaround. Fans were standing at the rail of the section leaning over seeking autographs from the players. The section collapsed to the aisle where the players leave the court, sending a handful of people falling about 3-5 feet to the concrete floor.

Steve Zito, senior vice president of arena operations, said officials will study the accident and talk to witnesses about what happened. He said there have been no similar incidents this season at games or other events, and crews check the stands before the building opens.

"This has surprised us," Zito said. "We're going to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again."

The section was roped off and the season ticket holders who normally sit there were relocated.

Luckily for those people, the Grizzlies suck and they had extra seats.

That's nothing compared to other collapses in other sports.

I think there've been a couple of collapses in soccer matches where fans actually fell a few meters.

I'm not sure, but I don't think anything like this has happened in an NBA arena in recent history.

Man, it must suck to be a memphis fan right now...First they lost Pau for peanuts, now they are about to lose Pac man for peanuts too, Memphis choked at the FT line, and the fans can practically feel a Oklahomo-gateish scenario when the franchise breaks loose for Seattle in 5 years ( or less!)

this won't help their cause if there was any chance for them to stay in Memphis

If only they had not shown thinking it was a Memphis Tigers game...

In all seriousness, sucks to be Memphis. They never deserved Vancouver's team to begin with, they spent millions of dollars to build FedEx Forum, and now it looks like the Grizzlies will eventually return to the Pacific Northwest. The name Grizzlies always made much more sense in Vancouver anyway.

True.. there is not a franchise with a bigger name mismatch than the Memphis Grizzlies. It'll be like naming a New York franchise, Farmers.

And I'm sure they won't sue because they love their team so much and would never want to take money from a non-profit organization like the Grizz.

Insert Oklahoma City instead of Memphis and that is pretty much what is gonna happen in a few years too after The Sonics move over there.

Oh, and slightly OT but almost forgot...

Tennessee has black bears in the Smokey Mountains, so grizzlies isn't too off.

The Sonics will be leaving the nickname and history behind so they will not be the OKC Sonics.
