He did build a championship team, but he should still get some heat for that Darko pick. Imagine if that core that won the title in 2004 had Melo or especially D-Wade. They could've three-peated.
It's quite sad. The guy is the face of the Pistons for so long. It will be almost like Rudy T leaving the Rockets.
A class act. A great player, and a big success initially as a GM. He knew he had to leave. I will miss him.
Joe Dumars has been one of the worst GM's in basketball for years now. I'm excited for Pistons fans that they at least have a chance of getting someone competent in the front office now. I don't want to take away from Dumars role in the championship, but he's just been awful since. Really, really, really awful. Darko. Ben Gordon and Charlie V. Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings. Awful.
It's like he though he could win with a not too well known group like he did the first time, things just got away from him. Bad decision to bring in Smith and Jennings, both will never be Championship players, especially Jennings.
It seems as if after 2004, Joe Dumars decided to enroll in Billy King's School of GMing to get a Masters in Sucking as a GM.
i thought he was one of the very best after assembling the 2004 championship team. looking back, a lot of it could've been dumb luck and larry brown getting the very best out of that team.
He focused too much on his first formula of trying to find success in guys that teams gave up pretty much. He kinda struck gold with that championship team. Billups was a journeyman bust... Hamilton was a so-so player Tayshaun was late first rounder. Sheed was one of the most talented PFs to ever play...too bad he just realized it playing in Detroit. (Seriously, outside of having face up game he had everything) Big Ben was basically a more athletic Chuck Hayes. All of these guys were guys teams gave up on...and if you look at his moves after the break up of that team you certainly see that he's looking for that homerun again. Especially the recent acquisitions of Jennings and Josh Smith. I mean credit where credit is due and I think his philospy would have worked if they hired great coaches (those teams also had some of the best coaches in the game today...) but he's hired some really dumb___ coaches to go along with the gamble.
Dumars really struck gold with the mid-season trade for Rasheed Wallace. That is what changed them from a playoff team to a championship winner. I agree with your comments on Rasheed. His main problem was between the ears. His brain and heart didn't match his talent.
some great and some terrible moves by Dumars, if only he'd not signed Smith and Jennings the pistons would have a pretty positive future
