Well, looks like Houston is going to the lottery next year. So lets make the most of it and ensure a #1 pick. With a possible consensus number one in Jason Williams, he would be easy to trade.

Of course we are not going to have a bad enough season to get the number one pick, unless we take a few steps:
    1) Francis takes a full year off to get his degree or to get a masters
    2) Cuttino develops tendinitis and can't play this season
    3) Don't resign mo or shandon....save the cap room for 2003 for duncan, ratliff, or mcdyess

Its time to pull a 97 spurs and go for the ring in 03!

    shut up...what is this rubbish
if we could get yao ming that'd be cool, but otherwise next year's draft doesnt have anyone i'd see the Rockets wanting with a #1 pick (the other projected are jason williams and dajuan both pgs)

    What a pathetic idea.

I'd rather see a team play well together and try their hardest to win a championship than punk out and try to fail in order to get a draft pick.

This team can make the playoffs.

This management team is a good one, despite how some people here may feel about the whole Hakeem deal.

They will address the center position...if not this year, then soon thereafter.

Bad time for sarcastic comment by the starter of this thread. I truly doubt we will be a lottery team. We will surprise some people.

Dreamsequence: Are you stupid or were you trying to be cute? I really don't care what you were trying to accomplish here because I doubt very seriously you are a Rocket fan. Just because Olajuwon no longer plays for the Rockets means that I'm going to start liking the Raptors. That's part of the beauty of being a fan of a TEAM. I hated Charles Barkley when he played for Philly and Phoenix, but I was jumping for joy when he joined the Rockets. Why don't you go and root for the Lakers? All the bandwagon fans do.

Of course all the "real" Rocket fans were upset when Fitch tanked games to get Akeem...

NO, NO, NO and ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! No ethical coach, owner, players or fan even talk about "tanking" until at least 2/3 into the season.

I'm curious, did that Rockets team prior to Akeem already have two franchise players, a star quality player who scored 20 points per game, and was a few games out of the playoffs, was one consistent quality center away from being a playoff contender, and had a young core of talented players on the roster?

Yeah, pretty much. And they had the Rookie of the Year, NCAA Player of the Year at Center. Plus, what difference does it make? The point is that no one griped when we tanked it for Akeem, so why should some of you pretend that the Rockets have never done anything so dastardly before...learn your history...

We don't have a first round pick this year. The Grizzlies receive our pick as compensation from the Francis trade.

Let's look back at that team, shall we?

    Coach: Bill Fitch
SF: Robert Reid, 14.0 PPG, 5.3 RPG
PF: Caldwell Jones, 9.9 PPG, 7.2 RPG
    C: Ralph Sampson, 21.0 PPG, 11.1 RPG
SG: Lewis Lloyd, 17.8 PPG, 3.9 APG
PG: Allen Leavell, 11.5 PPG, 5.6 APG
Key Subs included Rodney McCray (10.8 PPG) and Phil Ford (7.1 PPG & 5.1 APG)
    Final Record: 29-53
    Previous Record: 14-68

Sampson would have to be your 20+ PPG scorer but who is your 2 franchise players? Robert Reid and Lewis Lloyd?? Don't make me laugh. Plus this Rocket team finished 9 games back of the 8th seed in the playoffs which meant that team only won 38 games. The previous Rocket team finished 24 games out of the last playoff spot. I use this point to bring up that Rocks Millenium points out that last year's Rockets win 45 games and now are expected by Franchise Dream and maybe you to win less than that. As Casey Stengel said, "You can look it up." Maybe it is you that needs to learn your history.

Well Manny, now you get History 101. Historical Fact #1: Bill Fitch tanked games to get Akeem. This tanking is THE reason the NBA now has a lottery. Check any source you want and I doubt you'll find any other reason. Did you deny this? No. Did I point out that this was the key point I was making? Yes. Historical Fact #2: Ralph Sampson was the 20 ppg scorer. Rodney Mac was the second "franchise" player (or so we thought) as the #3 pick in the draft (unless you think a #3 pick is not supposed to be a good pick). Historical Fact #3: The Rockets were considered to have a good young core with Sampson and McCray and the rest of the team when they tanked games to get Akeem.

Bottom line is you can debate semantics but the Rockets were very similar in '84 and THEY TANKED THE GAMES. I am not in support of this idea, but OBVIOUSLY some "fans" don't know Rockets history, so I thought you ought to learn it before you criticize someone else as "not being a REAL fan."
