Planning on having a crawfish boil tomorrow night. Anybody wanna recommend a good place to buy crawfish? I know some HEB's have them. Some Fiestas have them, but I don't know how good they can be. Kemah? HK Market? Never done this before, so if someone has a good recipe or secrets let me know. Can you boil shrimp and/or crab in the same pot as the crawfish?
My brother drove to Kemah and got them $1:99 a pound if that helps. Everywhere else will be $3:29 or more per pound. I don't know if you are willing to make the drive though.
I live close to downtown and only need like 15 lbs so it probably wouldn't be worth it to drive all the way to Kemah. In May renting a beach house in Galveston so will definitely pick up some from Kemah. Thanks for the tip.
Hebert's is legendary, and they have a location near the Galleria (on Richmond, just inside the loop), but I don't think they're gonna be cheap. You will need to call them (713.621.6328) to check price and availability of fresh, live crawfish. I can't say that I've ever ordered from them. Although I love crawfish, nobody else in my family likes seafood.
Doing this for the first time with family. Only about 5 people will eat it and two are teenage girls. So I think 15 lbs would be good? Again, anybody know if you can do shrimp and crab in the same pot as crawfish?
There is this Vietnamese store over off of north beltway and vets memorial that we get crawfish. I want to say it's 1.29 a lb. Could be wrong. They sell them by the sack. I think they're 35 lbs a sack.
Beware: the crawfish you buy should be life, Red Swamp Crawfish from Louisiana. If the Asian market is selling something other than that, don't buy it: (1) freshness can't be guaranteed (2) Asian swamp may have contained pollution (3) Crawfish may not be of the right species
EDIT: life = live Also... Rockets03 - if you have leftovers, please email me at droxford-t at att dot net and I will come by and remove the unwanted crawfish. I'm thinking those two teenagers won't eat more than a quarter pound. Good luck, dude. I'd love to do a crawfish boil. All I need is about $400 of equipment and food, time, and bunch of friends. I have very little of all of the above.
I'm a little wary of buying crawfish from an Asian market anyways. That's the reason I started this thread otherwise I would have just gone to Bellaire.
Tomorrow morning I'm picking up 2 sacks (approx 35lbs each) from the place I always get them. L&L Seafood 517 West Mount Houston Road (at 45 North) Houston, TX 77037-1528 (281) 445-0044 They usually have the great prices and really great crawfish. Never have any deads and they are always bigger than I see at Fiesta or other places. You have to reserve them to be guaranteed some and they only sell by the bag. My son's 8th birthday is going to be a blast!!! Kid loves them spicy like his old man. And yes you can do shrimp and crab in the same pot. I'll post some pics tomorrow night.
Schweet! I work downtown and live inner-loop. I can be there in 5 minutes.
