All right....I'm agnostic and the religious right and zealots of all flavors drive me crazy. I mean really, really crazy. But am I the only one who is offended when the beliefs of others are presented in such a light? Kinda like lumping all Muslims in with terrorists....just seems like they're painting all Christians with the same brush....and doing it in a provoking manner. I'll see the movie, but I'm conflicted on this.
A fair argument but it still looks like a riot. I just hope he keeps the jokes focused on all religions and it isn't one bigged Christian smash-fest. I f I have one problem with Bill Maher and his type, it is that they are in fact as much of a zealot out of touch with reality nutjob as they like to make fun of. That's my biggest problem with politics in America is that one side often refuses to see the other side of the coin and respect people who feel differently.
I still want to see Bill Mahr and Dennis Miller in a Debate cause they are the same person . . just on different sides Mahr is a Athiestic Zealot to the extreme He was ok in my book . . but when I found he was affiliated with PETA I lost all respect for him [He was like on the board of directors or something big time] Rocket River [for the record . . I use to sympathize with Peta. . . until they start comparing the raising and eating of animals to Slavery and the Holocaust .. they crossed a line there. . that forever will leave me cold to them ]
First, I had no idea this was being made, and I am thrilled to see it. I don't like Maher personally per say, I mean he is a prick and far too pious at times, but I LOVE his show. The guests are generally well informed and Maher is a master at structuring the discussions so that they are volatile yet fluid. As for the trailer, it's a no brainer that not only will 90% of our christian-right defined population denounce/protest/boycott this film, feeling that it a specific cut at their belief in the doctrine of Christianity. Of course, the reaction will be harsher in other countries with stricter regulations on speech and religion, so I am not implying that it exclusively a Christ-bashing bonanza, just that most Americans will be turned off as they perceive it that way. Actually, this is exactly Maher's point: that many American Christians are willing to assume illogical, and seemingly impossible, things because their Bible says it, yet find the same level of improbable beliefs that are professed in other religions to be 'crazy' and unfathomable. I am very familiar with most of BM's views, and not all of them are as logical and open minded as he would sell them to be (ala. "everything, incl. antibiotics, in the pharmacy is poison"), but I've always admired his balls to tell it like it is on religion. Can't wait for this one.
very rarely do I find Bill Maher funny, I just don't really get why he has his own show and now movie. I find little of what he does amusing or worth my time. So I probably wont be going to see this movie.
I'm sure I'll see this. I'm not sure that ridiculing people is going to get him any sense of clarity beyond the clarity he already has on the topic. Topic aside, I'm growing a bit tired of this film-making formula: presented a slanted, already determined viewpoint in the guise of genuine questioning or fact-gathering in the context of a film. This seems to be the trend. I think Borat did it best.
I hope he follows this up with a sequel explaining "the big bang" or however else he believes the world came to be. Surely that wouldn't sound at all far-fetched. I'll probably see this, because I'm quite open minded and don't see anything wrong with seeing religion through other people's eyes. While I agree it might seem crazy to some to be a Christian, I simply haven't found a better way to explain my existence and Earth's. As for Christian's seeing other religions as crazy...I've never seen anybody act this way. The fact is...we're all here with beliefs that are quite similar. We're all searching for the answer to the same questions. Do I care if you call him Allah or Buddha? Absolutely not...as long as you are seeking the truth and not following everybody else like a sheep. People who get pissed off with organized religion and turn to atheism confuse me. So your belief is founded on not believing? Well then what do you believe in? How can your foundational beliefs be based on not believing other people's? Shouldn't you have your own way of explaining the world other than saying other people are crazy or wrong? (I hope I'm not sending this to D&D...)
I saw the preview for this several weeks ago, and frankly, I was surprised to see even as big an idiot as maher go to this extreme to commit career suicide like this. Although, technically, in order to commit career suicide, one must actually HAVE a career, and what little he had which could be called a career will be gone after this. I am no religious nut either, but I can see when someone has stepped WAY over the line, and boy did the morons who thought this was a good idea step over it. Out of curiosity, for the people who are waiting in breathless anticipation for this thing to come out: does it really, honestly, validate your own opinions when someone goes out and cherry-picks the most extreme and absurd examples found in religions and presents it as a smear on religions as a whole? I guess some people get a thrill out of laughing at and belittling others, but I don't get it. Apparently a movie about the majority of people in the country who are decent, intelligent, nice and hard-working (and oh yes, religious to some degree) did not titillate the intelligentsia enough.
He wouldn't do a film about the Big Bang because it wouldn't be as funny. He's a comedian. There are plenty of easy to understand videos out there about the Big Bang and how our cumulative knowledge has led us here. Here's one: An atheist shouldn't be labeled by something they don't believe in. I don't believe in astrology but I wouldn't call myself a non-Astrologer. That'd be useless and wouldn't descibe anything about me. I think too often people just assume that belief is somehow equated with morality or that believers have a special monopoly on being good people because of a special understanding of the mind of god. There are plenty of good kids who don't believe in Santa.
it is sad that somebody would spend so much time to create, produce, and release a film just to tear other people down.
