I understand you're trying to make Matt's case here for being elite, but nobody in this country will give him that respect until he's made his mark in the postseason, which is fair.

I agree with that. that's why i quoted schaub's line, "to get to that level you have to be the last man standing in February." from the shanon sharpe interview j.r posted.

My problem is that goldfish forget brees, putting up pro bowl numbers, was mediocre and worst than 8-8 in the 2 seasons prior to the superbowl.

The school of haters act like schaub can't get there but if he keeps his stats and the team wins...he will be there. It's all perception/reality.

I think this is fair, too - for the most part (he could play exceptionally well in the postseason and still lose through no fault of his own - does that make him less elite?).

The problem is that we can't have a ficitional discussion about Schaub. He's playing elite football right now. What he may or may not do in the postseason will not change that. You could make a case for one QB currently playing better: Matt Ryan. Maybe Roethlisberger, who's quietly having a very good year. Still... he's third. That's elite.

I've seen two of Manning's games this year and he's not the same the QB. He might still be good enough to play effectively. But he is not among the league's best QBs. Not right now.

Matt Schaub knew where the question was headed. He recoiled at the mention of the word elite and dismissed the notion that it might even remotely refer to him or the Houston Texans. Houston visits the Jets on Monday. “That’s just for outsiders’ perspective and how they can rank or sort through things,” Schaub said. “I don’t pay any attention to that or think about that.” Besides, he continued saying with a shrug, “It’s used so loosely nowadays that who knows what it means?” Schaub’s career, has been defined mostly by efficiency and grit, epitomized this season by his 105.3 quarterback rating, third best in the N.F.L. entering this weekend’s games; seven touchdown passes; one interception; and a chunk of his earlobe torn by a brutal hit. Elite or not, he has brought tranquillity to the Texans, who are 4-0 for the first time in their 11-year history and visit the Jets on Monday night. Houston has lofty expectations this season after reaching the playoffs for the first time last year, a run that ended in a loss to Baltimore. “The next step for us is to win a championship,” said Schaub, in his sixth season with Houston and his ninth in the N.F.L. “We have the right guys in this locker room to put ourselves in a position to do that. “Our team’s been going through it for a decade now of trying to get to that point. Myself included. So that’s the only thing that matters, when you talk about things personally, is to get our team and myself to that point.” Schaub, though, has yet to take a snap in the postseason. A broken foot caused him to miss the last six regular-season games and the Texans’ two playoff games, and motivated him during summer rehabilitation and workout sessions. He was joined by wide receiver Andre Johnson, a 10-year veteran coming off an injury-plagued 2011, and the two would often go to a nearby practice field at the University of Houston and run routes for almost an hour. They would take Schaub’s car for the 15-minute trip, two veterans bonding at the crossroads, talking about the Texans, their careers, wondering how many chances they still had left. “Our thing was, hey man, you never know what can happen,” Johnson said. “You never know when it’s going to be your last play. The biggest thing was, we’re both finally back healthy and we can be out there together. Let’s take advantage of it.” Schaub, 31, has proved relentless and could approach his career highs of 29 touchdowns, 4,770 yards and a 67.9 completion percentage, all reached during his 2009 Pro Bowl season. He prevailed in a shootout with Peyton Manning in Week 3 at Denver, matching a career high with four touchdown passes in the Texans’ 31-25 victory and quickly returning to the huddle after Broncos middle linebacker Joe Mays drilled him so hard, Schaub’s helmet flew off, ripping away a piece of his earlobe. Last week, he methodically took apart the Tennessee Titans, completing 20 of 28 passes for 202 yards and 2 touchdowns. “He’s played enough now, there’s nothing he hasn’t seen,” Texans Coach Gary Kubiak said. “He’s really mastered what we do. He’s had to teach some coaches; we’ve been through three or four coordinators that I’ve lost along the way, and Matt’s really had to become a coach on the field for us.” The Texans speak obsessively about protecting Schaub, who has been sacked only three times, the fewest allowed in the N.F.L., ahead of the Buffalo Bills with four and the Giants and the Indianapolis Colts with five each. A strong running attack led by Arian Foster and the league’s top-ranked defense provides a wash and rinse of sorts in keeping Schaub clean. But if Kubiak could figure it out, he would design plays to safeguard Schaub’s other earlobe. Kubiak, a former N.F.L. quarterback, is not happy about Schaub’s enduring 17 hits through four games. “I take a lot of pride in how I call a game, trying to protect a quarterback,” Kubiak said. “My point is, he’s taken a lot of lumps. He deserves a lot of credit for getting rid of the ball in some tough situations. I have got to protect him better. The line has got to protect him better.” A third-round draft pick, Schaub was part of the 2004 quarterback class that included the Giants’ Eli Manning, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger and the San Diego Chargers’ Philip Rivers. The three others were thrust into starting roles, but Schaub had to wait as a backup to Michael Vick for three years in Atlanta, getting only two starts, before being traded to Houston in 2007. Manning and Roethlisberger own two Super Bowl titles each, and Rivers has made several playoff appearances. All of them have thrown for more than 25,000 yards. “He’s been underrated,” Johnson said of Schaub. “He’s just been overlooked. If he was to get a ring, it would be different. “It’s important not just for him, I think it’s important for everybody. We all know that. We don’t have to talk about it. It’s on our mind, especially after getting a taste of the playoffs last year and then being a play away from going to the A.F.C. championship. Just that game alone was a big wake-up call for everybody.” Only the Falcons’ Matt Ryan and Roethlisberger thus far have higher passer ratings than Schaub, who reached 105 career touchdown passes this season and needs 1,111 yards to reach 20,000. But to Schaub, there is now only one way to validate himself and the Texans as elite. “Do you get your team to the end?” he said. “You look at a couple of those guys, they have multiple rings, and that’s what it’s ultimately judged on. To put myself in that category, yeah, as a player and the confidence I have in myself, I’d like to say I’m right up there with those guys. But we have to go out there and win a championship.”

Matt Shaub is elite and when we win the Super Bowl. Espn will let everyone know, Lol. Matt's been putting up elite numbers for 4 yrs now the consistency is there its just he hasn't gotten the exposure because of our struggles. Now that we're espn darlings they want to throw out the matt Shaub elite argument and show the numbers to back it up. Only thing is these are things we texans fans have known.

The way I feel is Matt Shaub is elite he's in the Brady, Rodgers, brees, and the mannings class in terms of talent and getting his team in proper position to play mistake free football offensivly. Which can be shown over his last 8 starts. Everyone of those elite qbs are different and don't play the game the same at all but one thing they do have in common is they all play very efficient smart football and have masterd their respective shcemes designed by their coaches. This is something Shaub has done as good as those guys mention that's why he deserves to be elite. There's not a qb in football that could run our offense like Matt and were very lucky we have him.

The only thing those guys have that Shaubs missing is the championships as soon as he gets one the stats will back up his elite status more so than when Eli won his first Super Bowl.

I'm very happy that Matt's getting the respect he deserves. I have always been a big believer in him and even told my family and friends he was elite 2 yrs ago and they thought i was joking. Now they think I'm a qb scout lol. He's got the offense perfected he's playing mistake free football and doesn't let the defense force him into anything which is the mark of a great qb.

But most of all Matt Shaub knows how to win be it 300 yards and 4 Tds or 200 yards and no Tds he knows what his team needs to win very game. Not many qbs who have played the game have been able to figure that out and that's what makes him elite.

Have you guys read the stuff on how close Schaub was to being a Jet. I always thought that the Texans overpaid for an unproven player at the time, but now I know why.

i think he was just trying too hard to get Andre into the game. after that INT, he just said **** it dre, you're not getting separation. i'm going to someone else.

Indeed.
When Schaub gets pressure he shuffles efficiently W/O panicking . When he's ran out of the pocket he doesn't force anything.

Several times, esp. this season, when flushed out of the pocket on 2nd/3rd down, he has elected to throw the rock away without hesitation. I love that. Punt, play smash mouth D.

Making the other team march 60-90 yards every possession is a big part of our system. Schaub obviously understands this. I'm glad to have a QB that only cares about winning.

rogers is certainly better than Schaub. but where was his eliteness against the Colts last week? he did blow an 18 point lead.

so now you're saying it's a team game? what do you think failed us tonight? that's right, schaub doesn't play defense either. he didn't have any protection and the run game stunk. i recall Rogers couldn't do anything in the Seattle game either when he was always running for his life.

Um, I think the offense scoring 17 points at home against this defense is a problem. What do you think? This isn't Seattle's defense. Schaub wasn't sacked 9 times.
