I was surfing spurstalk and saw how they have upgraded their forum and I was amazed. I am viewing the game thread right now and the thread is semi-refreshing (not totally refreshing the page but the posts are appearing as they are posted) on its own. I think this is an awesome feature and hope it could be implemented on Clutchfans one day.

Ummmm no. New posts automatically appear without having to refresh the page. I called it a "live forum" because that's what the mod called it over there.

I was just kidding. Sounds like an AJAX request to update threads, as opposed to refreshing the whole page. Same occurs at sites like ESPN that have widgets to auto-update twitter feeds and scroll the old ones away -- "live."

That can be a performance burden on the forums/servers considering the size of viewers Clutch attracts. As in, why call back to the server and auto-update someone who walked away from their machine. Plus, when I'm reading a post in the Best Ass thread, I don't really want some computer-bot to move me to the next post.

Oh nah, it doesn't move you to the next post on Spurstalk-- doesn't get rid of the old posts, just adds new ones. Could it really be a performance burden? The most online ever on spurstalk has been 7k, here on CF it has been 4k. And I think we have better servers than they do.

I always hoped for a feature like that, but didn't know if it was possible. My F5 button takes a pounding during trade rumors.

Yes it can. But I forgot another thing, I assumed it was a vBulletin feature they are using. It's not. It's a third-party plugin and it looks like it can only be applied to a new forum run by that code. Not something that can be applied to an existing forum. I could be wrong about that, but their "Live" forum feature is a separate tab, no? It actually looks like just one thread, and not a forum at all. If it can't work on the GARM, meh.

3rd Party code also means Clutch would need to be satisfied that the other company's code is sound and sustainable for future vBulletin upgrades. They could go out of business.

Check it out right now. The last post in the main Spurs forum was 16 minutes ago. We've probably made more posts in the D&D alone (on debate night) than they've had all day in all forums. Plus, they don't have a 4-0 FOOTBALL TEAM to talk about!!!

Clutch has twice the amount of registered users as Spurstalk in total and per day. Guests/Lurkers aren't as much as a performance hit to the server as registered members are.

I'm curious about the claim peak day. I'm not so sure that July 15th, 2009 peak of theirs is legit. Nothing happened on that day except Jefferson left his wife at the altar. lol

http://necolebitchie.com/2009/07/15/...-at-the-alter/

really! is that their peak news day! maybe I'm missing something.

you'd still pound F5 rather than waiting 30 seconds for the auto-bot to refresh for you.

Will it automatically switch to the next page after hitting the post limit (20) per page? That would suck because I'm a slow reader and I like to read things 3-5 times over. What happens if I'm reading them tl;dr posts and suddenly the page changes?

Nope, the page will continue to extend.

are you talking about this one single thread on their site called "Live". It's a tab at the top, independent of their main forums.

http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/activity.php

It's silly. Just a bunch of kids doing one liners about nothing. It doesn't seem like this add-on supports their main forums like a GARM or Hangout. It's just a single stream, like a chat room. And it looks like only an admin could start it.

If that is correct, then we wouldn't be able to start our own "Live" threads, right? Nor would Clutch be able to magically make all GARM threads turn Live. What is the win, here?

btw: If I'm right, I'm going to be pissed that I went to their site for the first time for nothing.

I just checked your link and youre way off bro. Im talking the normal threads like we have here.

Like this one

http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/show...203443&page=10

Posts automatically show up on that thread. Noones posting in that thread right now but if you go to an active thread you will see it.

I hope Clutch checks this out. Its innovative and worth a try. Better for this forum if implemented.

It's a third-party plugin. You buy it separately. Scroll down to the bottom and you can see the link.

I'm glad to see it actually is in the main threads, or I would have been pissed that I went to the Spurs site for my first time just to see that one Live thread.

So on multiple page threads, I suppose only people reading the last page will see the refresh.

It's definitely a quality feature. I can guess some issues of pagination that the developers had to decide how to handle, and issues like that often have a crowd of users who get confused.

So you see what other people are typing while you're typing out your own response? CF has this already, it's called the chat room.

Except this is more convenient for those anticipating updates on a particular topic. Can you post tweets in the chat room? Is everyone in the chat room all the time? Can you post pictures in the chat room? Can you post paragraphs in chat room? Can you read messages in a chat room without the screen rolling down everytime someone says something? Nope. This is way better.
